Wisdom tooth extraction (3 impacted 1 normal)

Let me start off by saying that I really scared of any kind of surgery and have never been under the knife my entire life. I am 31 now. My appointment is on Monday and will IV sedation. I am freaking out ever since I made the appointment.

Here is what is freaking me out:

1. After IV sedation will I feel any pain at all. As far my knowledge goes IV sedatives are not painkillers and the doctor will give me local anesthetic. Will I still feel pain, I dont mind the drilling or pulling out of teeth as long as I don't feel a thing.
2. What if the IV sedative has a bad reaction with my body?

Well, with iv sedation it kind of depends on the type of meds they give you and how you react to them. You should be totally numbed up and not feel any pain. Your body can still respond to pain with iv sedation but from what I have been told you can still talk to them and respond you just don't remember it. So, they will know immediately if you are feeling any discomfort and can give you what you need to make sure you are numbed up good. With some kinds of iv sedation you are kind of aware of what's going on but you are so relaxed and not really concerned with what's going on. There are other types of meds that make you totally out but you will have all kinds of monitors on you and your oral surgeon will know exactly how you are feeling just by that. If you felt any discomfort your heart rate and blood pressure will elevate. That is what my oral surgeon told me. He said he will know exactly how I'm feeling by all the monitors I will have on and if I need it he will top up the local anesthetic or give me whatever I need. Sometimes they can give you pain meds through the iv. The most important thing is that you have an oral surgeon that you trust. You will be ok and it will seem like time went by really fast. You won't remember anything. I hope this helps but in all honesty I encourage you to discuss all this with your oral surgeon. He/she can put your mind at ease. Having said all that I completely understand your fears and concerns. I'm 44 and having my bottom wisdoms out Thursday with iv sedation. They are partial boney impactions and bone removal is necessary so I had all those same questions but I discussed every detail with my oral surgeon and he has been nothing but wonderful so far. I'm still scared and you will be too until it's all over with.

I had my wisdom teeth removed over a year ago under IV sedation. I was similarly nervous as I'd had bad reactions to GA before for more major surgery. IV sedation was wonderful though, I'd recommend it to anyone and would gladly have it again. They tell me I was awake during the procedure, but I don't remember anything. Also you're pumped full of pain meds, so the post-op pain is really minimal until 6-12 hours after the procedure.

After that, it's down to personal experience I didn't need anything more than Advil for the first 48 hours then nothing after that for the pain - and I had five teeth to come out! (one wisdom tooth growing in the jawline above another one which was impacted...sigh). Just make sure whoever you go with takes lots of notes about post-op care. You don't want to go home and start swilling your mouth out vigorously with water straight away, for instance.

Good luck with your op - everything will be fine, and soon you'll be rid of those troublesome teeth!!
