hi
ive had my wisdom tooth out this morning [smiley=jumping.gif]the numbness is gone and it is sore, i am now getting paroniod about dry socket i have never heard of this, in thpast after an extraction i have usually just got on with it (ive even walked out and lit a cig up) i do not smoke on a regular basis but i am addicted to nicotine chewing gum. do you think if i just put a piece of gum between my gum and cheek it will be ok? if any one knows it will be a big help:)

Hi Sillygirl...congrats on your tooth out and done with....hope all goes well. Sorry Im not so sure on answering your question but I'd be curious as well since I smoke once in awhile too....but I can say that I "thought" I read somewhere on here (not sure?) but that "any" sucking motion could cause dry socket..again, I could be wrong but until someone else can answer you you might want to be real careful. I know, I have no clue what I will do when my day comes ...

You sound good for this just having been done:)) yayyy! [smiley=jumping.gif]

Good for you for having it done! They really make a big deal about the no smoking thing, so I would definitely not smoke. I'd ask one of th dentists here about the gum chewing, though. You don't want to risk doing something that could prolong the healing process!

You don't mention painkillers at all. Great guns on getting the tooth out but it is bound to be a little sore so if I were you, I would start taking your normal painkillers for a little while to see if that helps. I should imagine the soreness will wear off. Trouble is we all tend to see the words dry socket and imagine that's what we're automatically going to get if we have extractions, but the reality is it isn't that common. If, however, you are still experiencing soreness when you wake up tomorrow, or it gets worse and really becomes a pain, then I would immediately ring the dentist.

cheers everyone i am taking painkillers but my face feels likes its been punched. this is the worst bit about having teeth out. ive got to do it all again soon!
:)
