I had 3 wisdom teeth removed; two were surgically removed. I've been on a soft diet since. I used this as an opportunity to quit smoking and haven't had a cigarette since the day before. I've irrigated like instructed and stuck to all the instructions like glue. I wasn't put on antibiotics right away.

However, I now feel like the poster child for everything wrong. :/ I have the numbing in my face running from my jaw up to my bottom lip which tingles a lot. I do not have the range of motion in my jaw like before and stretching is not helping. I still can't eat anything really solid since I can't open my mouth and chewing is exhausting. I also have a lump under my jaw now that isn't really going away and is very tender... Yesterday, day 7, I noticed that my mouth started tasting awful, the pain returned; pus came out of the wound and I got put on antibiotics.

So, here's what I want to know. What is that lump under my jaw and how long will it be there? He said nothing about it so I guess its normal. How long will it take for the pain to go away now that I'm on antibiotics? Is there something I can do to help speed up the process? I'm still flushing it with salt water. Also, since the numb area tingles does that mean the sensation may return? Lots of questions I know but my oral surgeon is very...standoff-ish.

I'm not a dentist but the lump under your jaw may be an enlarged lymph node- part of the body's response to fighting infection.

Make sure you are getting enough nutrition to aid in healing and continue to move the jaw and finish your antibiotics.

Your oral surgeon owes you answers. Did he say if you had a dry socket- it is most common on lower wizzies.

Hi!

I had a dry socket that didn't start to manifest until day six, when the blood clot got disturbed, it's FINALLY going away completely, but the problems lasted more than a month, with pain coming and going, but each time I had a bad day, it would be less bad than before, if you know what I mean. What helped for me was just keeping REALLY clean: brushing and flossing and rinsing out with lots of water before using mouthwash twice a day. I used a syringe with water to clean out the socket too, but I was instructed to do it. But especially the part about rinsing out and keeping clean made a difference to me.

I'd definitely ask about the numbing and tingling, sounds like nerve damage. This usually heals itself, but I'd still ask.

My oral surgeon wasn't so easy to get in touch with either: I had to go to his office in order to talk directly with him, and when I did that he's take the opportunity to just put me in the chair and have a look at the extraction site. I'd much rather talk with him on the phone.
