Hi all,

I was hoping someone could give me a general insight on the following:

1. Teeth which have grey/silver filings, can those filings be extracted and re-done using white ones?
2. Ive never been able to put my teeth together, the bottom teeth and top never touch and leaves a small gap, is there anything that can be done here?
3. I think from over scrubbing, and not taking care of my teeth too much, theres not a lot of anamol left apon them which makes them look quite thin and yellow - What step can i take here?
4. Prices? I know without knowing what needs to be done, is impossible to go into the financials. But could someone recommend general prices for a number of procedures such as root canal, cavities, taking teeth out, teeth whitening etc.

The reason i ask these questions is I'm sick of my teeth. Im only 21 and ever since i can remember, i have always been embarrassed about my teeth and smile (Complete lack of it). Im now at the stage where i want to be physically fit, look good and more importantly have a healthy mouth and take care of my teeth and life. Im looking at going to a private dentist for a consultation soon and don't really care about what i need to pay to achieve a Hollywood smile - but will that ever be possible?

Any replies will be appreciated.

1) Yes
2) Probably, can't tell from here.
3) Stop over scrubbing? Really hard to say without seeing.
4) Find a dentist you like first and work from there.

If you're in Glasgow I highly recommend Mike Gow at the Berkley Clinic. He posts on here from time to time.

Yes, but amalgam fillings can last a lifetime and should only be changed for composite if they are failing in some way. Many people change them for cosmetic reasons but you have to ask yourself, even if you do care about cosmetics, whether people actually notice silver fillings in molars. There are risks to changing them as composite is very technique sensitive so if you do change some, do them slowly so you can assess whether it is working for you with minimal to no 'post-op' sensitivity.

Mike Gow would be a great choice and would presumably be able to refer you appropriately re orthodontics if desirable/desired.
