A root canaled tooth is aching.......can it be saved or does it need to be extracted??

I had a root canal done in May on a lower front tooth due to what my dentist said was pulpitis caused by my grinding my teeth. It was aching a bit when I went back to see him in June, he told me that was normal, that it sometimes takes a while for the tooth to settle down. He is going to crown it in November, but told me to call him if I need to take any pain-relievers for that tooth.
Well, the tooth is aching almost as bad as when I had the root canal done (starting to ache a bit a week ago, has gotten worse the last couple of days). I have been taking 4 ibuprofen every 4 hours for it and getting 95% relief.
My question is.....will he have to extract that tooth now because did the root canal fail????
Any insight into my situation will be greatly appreciated!!

Hi I had one done in March, and it has had two infections since, one dentist just wanted to pull it, which I didn't like and I now have another dentist that is going to send me to a specialist, I think it is an endodontist, to see if he can re do it. I am hoping all is not lost as it has not flared up since the end of May I think it was. So before you let your dentist pull it see if it can be re done, by a specialist. I don't know when I see the specialist as I am waiting to hear from them, but I will let you know what happens. There is a reason they give rct some time to settle before crowning, so all might not be lost.
I would contact your dentist and let him have a look, you may have a bit of infection, or it could just be playing up. I do sometimes get a slight twinge, but not enough to take painkillers. Mine does have some infection under it though.

If you find out anything let us know how you go on.

It's a lower front tooth so I'm going to do all the fighting I can to save it.

I saw a specialist last year. My tooth had a root canal done 9 years before. I then went for a replacement filling and ended up with toothache in that tooth. I was extremely unhappy with the service. They would not x-ray me and just kept saying it would settle. I also could never get an appointment.
I went to another dentist and they x-rayed it and told me it was infected and I had to see a specialist to fix it.

It has been about 8 months now and last month I saw the specialist again for my 6 month x-ray after treatment and everything looks fine now.
