Can anyone tell me at what point periodontist diease is beyond treatment?

I have been faithful about 6 mo. cleanings but because my dentist wants to start some recontrution work he wants me to see a perio. I do have some gum recession but now I'm worried sick!!! If I was beyond repair wouldn't my dentist have sent me before this???? I don't have my appointment for another 4 weeks and I just have myself sick.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm sorry I don't know much about this but I googled periodontal disease, which I'm sure you've done anyway but maybe this is still worth a peep, try not to worry yourself too much though, the net is useful for some stuff but I find we usually read allsorts and get ourselves worked up into a real state.. so try and hang in there until your dentist can tell you what's going on as only he/she knows best, you can always call him to put your mind at ease if you can't wait, just say you have a few questions that you forgot to ask on your last visit...

Hi avalon

Underlying perio disease is the most common reason that dental work,ie crowns bridges implants etc, fail. Your dentist is doing the right thing in making sure that your gum condition will suport any work they are planning to do. This is more for your benifit as there would be no point you undergoing lots of treatment if the work wont last more than a few years because your gums aren't at their best.

Take the opertunity to see the periodontist as a chance to check that everything with your gums is as good as it can be that way it will make your long term treatment much easier. After all you wouldn't want a builder putting an extension on to your house without first checking the foundations!!

Any perio questions you have i am happy to answer as your resident happy hygienist!! :P
