Dental visit/x-ray while pregnant?

Is it safe? I found out less than a week ago that I am expecting, and I know dental cleanings are encouraged during pregnancy. How about x-rays? Are they do-able during the first trimester or do dentists usually wait til the second trimester to do x-rays and restorative work? Is it possible to get your teeth cleaned without x-rays being done? I do not want to wait til the second trimester for a cleaning because it has been years. My appt. is in 2wk.

As long as they use a lead apron for the x-rays, your child will get no exposure to the radiation. They've done studies to test this.

Out of an abundance of caution, most dentists will wait until at least the second trimester or after the pregnancy to do x-rays, depending on your specific situation.

Getting your teeth cleaned during pregnancy is actually quite important as your gums have a tendency to get very inflamed and irritated (known as pregnancy gingivitis) as a result of your hormones. Also, untreated periodontal disease has been linked with pre-term birth.

Any restorative work can be safely done while you're pregnant. Again, most dentists like to wait until the second trimester to do this but it can really be done at any time safely. I've had patients who have gotten fillings done right up until the last several weeks before they give birth because they don't think they'll have time to do it after the baby arrives!

I would reschedule the appt for a day when you are in the 2nd trimester. The first trimester is reserved for emergency treatment only and you should avoid any xrays unless they are absolutely necessary. Waiting another 3 months won't make a huge difference when it comes to getting your teeth cleaned. Play it safe for the baby. They will want to take atleast 4 xrays at that time and it's just not worth it to risk exposing the baby during the time where the baby is most vulnerable to harmful effects of radiation.
