Posting a question for my daughter who is 20 and about to get her braces off in September. Its been over 30 years since I got my braces and I cannot remember what it was like to get braces off. She was asking me about it today and worried it would be painful. Any experiences of what its like?

My memory about this is also old but I don't remember pain. I remember more hearing the popping sounds when they were taking off bits. I also remember them needing to polish off some of the extra cement. The process wasn't bad I'm probably forgetting things.

Thank you Sol.. I think not remembering pain is definately a good sign! :). Thanks

From what I remember, it was a pretty easy process. Only thing might be that the process feels a bit awkward, but I don’t remember having pain.

Thankyou Geos :)

My heart goes out to you, as I went through this twice, once in the eighties and again in the mid nineties. Despite the ordeal of the ongoing treatment, I can assure anyone that, if the clinician knows what he or she is doing, removal should be totally painless and stress free. You will be aware of what it is like having a wire change; this too, is normally straightforward.

The hardest part was having the rings removed from my back teeth; from what I can remember, especially the second time, the bits came out quite swiftly with minimal fuss. The only sensation one might feel is the teeth settling shortly after all is removed; normally this is not painful, but a soft throbbing sensation might be experienced, a bit like when the pain of a headache has gone but the throb lingers for a short while after the pain killers have kicked in. Cleaning up is simular to a routine scale and polish; the brush used to polish off any cement has a rougher texture, but the sensation is simular to the softer ones used in cosmetic polish. It might be run at a faster speed, so a little more "buzzing" in the mouth, but again, should not hurt at all!

Hope this is of help and comfort, and happy to chat more if you like on this or anything.

The molar braces were the worst to remove but it wasn't painful, just a very strange feeling.

So My daughter got her braces off last week. I forgot to report , it was only slightly sensitive and "weird feeling".. but she is most definately enjoying her new found freedom after a few years of braces :) :) Thanks for all the advice!
