I have a root canaled tooth that can't be saved so now I have to get it out. I am beyond terrified. This all started from a little bump on my gum from before xmass, but in was too scared to look at it so finally I did on Jan 3rd and I called and made a appt, then they referred me to an endodontist and so it was decided yesterday that I needed it out. My appt is Jan 31st. I am just beyond myself. Any positive thoughts would be great. I am taking 2 xanax before my appt, but I am thinking my fear will not allow the xanax to actually work. I am so tired of crying. I take such good care of my teeth even though I have major dental anxiety and this still happended. I wish I wasn't so scared,it suck to let something over take your life.

Hey there, it will be ok!!! I know the thought is terrifying but I promise you it won't be that bad and you will be ok. Does your dentist have the option of gas? I have used it before.with amazing results. My current dentist does not have that option and I recently had 3 teeth pulled and have survived. It's very normal.to be scared or apprehensive but I promise you you will be ok. Extractions, even tough Ines, are very routine!

Yes, I will have nitrous. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm trying my best to rationalize it all in my head. Ugh, I've had crowns, rootcanals, fillings and for some reason this is terrifying to me.

As far as dental procedures go, extractions are probably the quickest and easiest - it will take them longer to numb you and get the nitrous going than it will to take the tooth out. Also, if it helps any to know, when they extract a tooth, it's more of a gentle rocking back and forth of the tooth than yanking and tugging.

Thank you so much for your reply. It really helps a lot hearing positive responses, there's so much negative stuff out there that really freaked me out.

Dude - read my post about my nitrous. I had the exact same thing. Molar 31, was a root canal with a crown that had something gross underneath it and it was unsaveable. I am almost to the 24 hour mark. I took a pain pill because they told me to first thing when I got home. Then I have not had one since, and I am a WEENIE!

I posted my whole experience yesterday. I'll paste parts of it here that you;ll benefit from:

Was it something I would plan on wanting to do again? No...but something to be as petrified as I was - nah!!!!

Funny thing is that nitrous....woooooohooooo if you are on the fence - DO IT!!!!! - I swear I started hearing techno music while they were giving me shots. The background music and the people talking in other exam rooms, I SWEAR it sounded like a club.

I told them this while I was waiting for the shots to kick in, and they said they have heard that before, haha. They also said the the song that was on while he was giving me the shots was Adele's "Someone Like You" HA!!! - not techno, far from it!

When he came back and said it was time to start, I thought "OK, use your meditation guidance you have been trying to learn" - Jason Stephenson on YouTube is AMAZING!!!!! Try him out for sleep and/or any anxiety - oh my GOSH - he is awesome. His voice was in my head as I started to semi-panic. If you just search his name of YouTube - you will NOT regret it.)

Event plus Reaction equals Outcome. So I was thinking "does this suck? Yeah. Will freaking out help? No." So, I decided at that exact moment I would close my eyes and say it over and over knowing that I was choosing to not make this bad. By the time I said E plus R equals O for the 6th or 7th time, the dentist laughed and said "OK, club kid, sit up. All done!! We are increasing your oxygen so you can come back from the club!"

I can NOT believe I wasted so much energy panicking and worrying over something that was so minor. Guys, I am a BIG baby. You ALL can do this and be as embarrassed :giggle: as I am for being so silly. I am so grateful for being able to read your stories and listen to others vent and share fears that I was having. I wish you guys the very best and hopefully will stay around for a virtual hand holding session or a chin up pep talk for someone in need.

Weeee! It's over!!!!!;D

And THAT is EXACTLY how yours will go. Dude - seriously, I look back and really am sad for what I put myself through over nothing.

I have had several teeth extracted and it's always been by far the quickest and easiest dental visits for me. I've never needed a pain pill after. You'll want to take it as easy as you can the rest of that day and the next if possible, to allow a good clot to form in the socket.

Almost every time I've had a tooth pulled, at some point I'll ask them to stop for a second because my jaw cramps, not because of any pain from pulling the tooth, and they will inform me to take as long as I need, considering the tooth is out! One tooth I had the dentist stop, rested my jaw for a minute, and when I told him ok it was about 3 seconds later he says OK! All done!

I don't think you need to worry. It won't be as bad as you think!

Thanks. I will definitely use the nitrous.

Tyler. DO NOT WORRY.

I'm 23 and from assault when I was 16 from a man I had my 2 front teeth knocked out and pushed back up into my gums that night in hospital. Ouch I know.

I then had root canals done on them and 7 years later. BOOM. They start falling out. I'm not afraid of the dentist thankfully I just get on with it. I respect your fear tho, I feel like crap I've to wear dentures at the moment until I get implants costing me 4000 man. Gutted. Genuinely feel depressed and haven't left the house in 3 weeks and I'm not eating.

Anyway I had my 2 teeth out on Monday there and I'm 6 days in, it is now Sunday.

I was never nervous until I knew I had to get my teeth out but trust me, it's never as bad as you think. I expected the worst and it was totally PAINLESS! You can trust me on this. All I had was the needle which was local anasthetic. Obviously mine being front teeth I got immediate dentures.

May I ask which tooth yours is mate?

Trust me man it will not be as bad as you think. It will be out in no time it only takes like 3 minutes and BAM. It's out. You won't even know when it's out, the dentist will tell you. That's now painless it is. It's the thought of it that is the worst mate, you an do this man, postive thoughts :) try not to dwell on it and let it ruin your month!

It's the back molar number 31, had a root canal done many, many years ago. Thanks for the reply.
