Extraction under IV sedation saga cancelled for the 2nd time an hour before the appointment - 30 seconds after taking premed (Temazepam).

I've had a rough ride with this one to say the least. I've had multiple appointments this year to have 2 teeth extracted under IV sedation.

The first appointment, they were unable to find a vein and asked if I'd be willing to try extraction with local only. I agreed since I'd worked myself up to having it. One tooth came out easily but the second one (which was infected) was causing pain on pulling. She kept topping up the local and trying again which ended up with me a shivering wreck, shaking violently. She decided that this definitely needed to be done under IV so another appointment was made for this one.

The next appointment was cancelled the day before due to an emergency calling in. Made another appointment.

Next appointment day came and I was a nervous wreck after the pain and violent shaking the last time. She still was unable to find a vein. Suggested another appointment but prescribed Temazepam to take the night before and an hour before my next appointment.

Took the temazepam last night and again at 8am this morning. 30 seconds after taking my morning dose, the receptionist called to cancel as the dentist is off sick. So I'm now dozy and can't work from home. I just want to mention that they have all been great apart from the unavoidable cancellations and failed IV issues. I'm just so disheartened as I work myself up each time. Guess today is a day of sleep on the sofa.

Hi! For what its worth I know that these things can be scary and make it diffciult to have the procedure done. I would recommend having nitrous along with some other oral sedative to help you get this. I think this will be more than enough to make you comfortable and to help you with the extraction

Hi @Nalz , apologies for the late reply (for all I know you may have had the extraction already). Just wondering if there are options for seeing someone else, or if you really like your current dentist, to have someone come in who is a bit more experienced with finding a vein? I mean, not finding a vein once could happen to anyone, but having it happen repeatedly does seem to point to maybe a lack of experience with this aspect of IV sedation. Do you have any update?

@Nalz you are lucky you could get that medication. No one in my area carries my oral surgeon four days before the surgery called it in to a pharmacy. There was no they could not provide. I called three other pharmacies, including one in a hospital. They did not have it either at that point my oral surgeon after paying $250 for a console felt I was too anxious and discharge me from CARE and told me to get it done in a hospital setting. I have read so many nightmares about last-minute cancellations also from others and this blog I wish you the best of luck

Thanks for the replies all! I managed to get an appointment at the end of May, took the Temazepam before the appointment and she found a vein straight away! She said that it must have been anxiety making my veins harder to find. The extraction and the fillings done under sedation was so much easier for me and I even tried to join in the conversation during my treatment went home and snoozed on the sofa the rest of the day and was in bed by 8pm.

I'd feel so much happier having future treatment under sedation.
