Ever since going to a particularly unpleasant Orthodontist as a child I have suffered with a dental phobia. To make things worse, I have a very sensitive gag reflex which makes it hard for the poor dentist to get a good look at my teeth, let alone do any work required!
4 years ago, while I was pregnant part of one of my lower molars fell off. I had it temporarily filled and then once I'd had my baby I had it filled, no drilling, just a paste pumped in. Job done.
Then when I was pregnant with my second child in 2009 the filling fell out, so I had a temporary filling in again and was told to wait until I'd had the baby for further treatment, possibly a crown.
In February this year I started getting bad pain in that tooth and all along the jaw line. I saw an emergency dentist who said it needed removing and referred me to the hospital. Then as the pain got worse I saw my usual dentist who said that extraction wasn't necessary and told me to cancel the appointment, he would fix it once I had the baby. After several appointments - which were torment as I was very afraid each time as to what would happen - I decided that my dentist did not seem to have my best interests at heart and so changed dentists. He hadn't even x-rayed the tooth, he just tapped it each time as as it wasn't too bad, told me to wait.
Anyway, the new dentist tried to x-ray the tooth, but my gag reflex prevented a good enough picture, so she referred me to the hospital again to have it removed using IV sedation.
I had an initial consultation where they did an x-ray that goes round your head, rather than having to bite on those tabs, like at the dentists. Much better! They found an abscess and confirmed that the tooth needed removing.
I had the actual appointment on Monday of this week and was the most nervous I have ever been. I remember commenting to my husband when we were in the waiting room that I was more nervous at having the tooth out than I was being induced with my second child!
We were seen straight away and the dental nurse was very patient with me and the fact that I was very visibly upset. I was shown to the room where a lovely, kind dentist was waiting and he asked me a few questions before asking me to sit in the chair - that was the worst part as I knew that once I sat down it would all happen.
They put the IV in my arm while my husband held my other hand and the next thing I know they are asking me to touch my nose and try to stand up!! I kept asking "Is it really all done?" as I couldn't believe that I hadn't felt or known anything! Even though I had quite a bad infection which was visible underneath my jaw, most of the tooth came out first time and only a little part of the root needed getting out separately.
I don't really remember much of the rest of the day, but I do know that if I should ever have to have anything else done in the way that I will not be frightened in the least! What a fantastic way to get the work done. (Although, apparently, I did accuse the dentist of trying to put a toy car in my mouth whilst I was under the sedation!! It was actually the tool they use to extract the tooth!!)
If there is anyone having this kind of treatment in the future, please, please, please don't be afraid. You know nothing of the treatment and there are no nasty after effects from the sedatives. In fact, I came round starving and begging for some soup!!
Now, 2 days on I have no pain and I am so glad that it is finally all over.![Jumping [smiley=jumping.gif] [smiley=jumping.gif]](/forum/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/dfcsmilies/jumping.gif)

I'm very pleased with myself for going through with it!! Wish I'd known it would be that easy before hand as I had months of worry about it while I was waiting for the appointment. If only I could have all my dental work done this way!!
