Fear of losing control (Twilight Sedation)

My biggest fear EVER has been of any form of sedation. It is what has kept me from the dentist... I finally had no choice but to go because of a really bad toothache... tomorrow morning, they're taking out two of my teeth, and because of my last appt, where they put in fillings, they decided it was best if I was sedated for it... except that's part of the problem. I already have bad anxiety, and with it comes a fear of embarrassment... I don't want to say or do anything embarrassing to me, especially if I don't remember it. I also don't like that I'd have no control... I wouldn't remember anything, so who knows what could happen. I mean, I don't expect anything BAD... but that embarrassment thing comes up here... I've heard too many people say things that would cause me to be mortified... heck, I get second-hand embarrassment just thinking about it.

I need to have this done, but that fear of sedation has caused me to have multiple small panic attacks today, as well as a couple of worse ones over the past few hours... on my drive home from work I kept screaming how I didn't want them to touch me, how I wanted them to leave me alone...

I'm scared... nothing anyone has said has helped... I actually told my brother's GF (who is taking me) that if I hear one laugh, something will die, possibly a kitten (not really, but it gets the point across).

... I don't want to do this, and not even the valium they gave me to take tonight is helping...

Help...

I hope that your dentist appointment went ok. I was scared of being sedated for my appointment but it went even better than they said it would. I don't remember a whole lot about being in the chair but I managed to make it in the house afterwards without help. I am so grateful that it worked!

What is twilight sedation? My dentist has 3 types: Nitrous (laughing gas nose mask), IV sedation and the pill that gets you extremely sedated you take before your appointment begins.

Hi Vysyn,

I wish you all the best for the next appointment, its okay to be scared but let it overcome you. Consider it as a future investment where you can enjoy all your favorite foods with no pain...Good Luck :)

"Twilight anesthesia is an anesthetic technique where a mild dose of general anesthesia is applied to induce anxiolysis (anxiety relief), hypnosis, and anterograde amnesia (inability to form new memories). The patient is not unconscious, but sedated."

Some people especially someone who likes control won't like nitrous oxide.
I never had anyone who didn't like IV sedation.

In the 90's and early 00's, IV sedation was referred to as Twilight Sedation or Twilight Sleep, at least it was here in Caanda. It is now referred to as IV sedation in most medical settings though, but I have no idea why they dropped Twilight from the name.

So laughing gas? haha I never heard the term twilight except in books!

Definitely not laughing gas (that's also known as nitrous oxide). Twilight sedation is administered via your vein (IV), not through a hose attached to your nose.

And maybe you're very young? Twilight is the time between day and night (as the sun is setting), and was a word used quite commonly before the vampire books were written.
