I know it is hard not to worry, but it will be easier than you imagine. I recently had a molar extracted, and the tooth broke while extracting (it was cracked). The dentist pulled the roots out separately, and acted like it was no big deal at all. It wasn't any worse, and didn't take any longer than the molar extraction I had previously where it all came out in one piece.

Anxiety is a normal and expected response to a stressful situation. You are right where we’d expect you to be.

You can get through this anxiety. There is a better life on the far side of this anxiety.

Let us know how you do.

Thanks for share your experience. Finally I could sleep past 3 am, I will try not to worry too much.

I know, I try not to think about it before the day, but definitely the day before is like oh jezz this is real. I had a extraction when I was young around 17 and what I remember it wasnt a good experience. ?

Today was a diferent feeling! The extractions was quick probably around 20 min both of them. I was shaking, I didnt feel any pain but all this pulling and presion got my nervous to the top. My dentist keep telling me your doing good, great, he let me know when Im going to feel a lot presion. After that he prescribed me antibiotics because I had an infection, info about Post care and that he needs me to check again in one week to see how heals.
He left and told to his assistant to explain me any question blah blah for some reason when Im with him I dont ask a lot about what is coming and what do you think and he is more like we gonna do this and we will see how you improve and I understand he want to see my progress and based on my progress next step. But I keep asking to her assistant more. Today her assistan was another one, she was nice, she took my hand when she saw me strugling but I think she gave me too much information about the future or wanted to be really honest, and is not her fault cause it was me making the questions. She told me probably I gonna lost the other molar, cause is in bad condition. But anyway doctor want to see after the deep cleaning, she explain me all this abouth perodiontal disease, that is not curable but the idea is keeping under control with good care and visit the dentist frequently. I asked her about people with periodontal like me and orthondotic treatment after is controled and she says i dont think is a good idea, cause the bone loss, and you dont want to move your teeth. In that moment I feel so bad with myself, I cant explain how mad I was, to let everything goes so bad. I feel like all those step moving foward was erased and Im in the same point where I was. Im depress now, is like your dreams are gone, but at the same time I want to stay strong, that my doctor want to see how I progress and maybe a miracle happen and he can save the other molar, maybe I qualify for a future implant to replace the molars and yes maybe I can control my diease and I can have my teeth aligned with a orthondontic treatment. It’s just today wasnt my day! ?

You had the courage to learn the truth.

You didn’t want to hear it, but you did. You made it through, and now you can start to build a new dental life, one based on the foundation of truth.

You have done very well.

Hi VVD,

really sorry to read about the bad news you got and I can't even imagine how devastating it must feel to believe your dreams are gone.
Reading your post I was wondering what questions did you ask your assistant and whether she really had the information necessary to give you a diagnosis of your dreams not gonna happen. Thinking about this I believe it might be the best idea to get a second opinion (as for any dental news that are worse than what wished for) and this second opinion should come from your dentist as he will the most likely be able to predict how possible it is for you to get the orthodontic treatment and if this is not possible, to discuss with you what else can be done for you to get the smile you are happy with. Did your dentist know you would like to get orthodontic treatment or was your assistant the first one you asked?
Dentistry is a very complex subject and I believe things are not always black or white but most often about what can be done and how (and sometimes it's about starting treatment and see what happens). That's why having a chat about this with your dentist might be worthy a try. I will keep my fingers crossed for you to get some good news there.

All the best wishes and keep us posted

Thanks for your reply, I was talking with the assistant while I was waiting there foy my prescription. I know I need to talk with him (my dentist) but is just like I freeze to make questions more than the essentials Im going to be honest is scare me. He just say about that molar while working on the extraction, that we will see after the deep cleaning. The only thing is wait after finish my deep cleaning to see how I recover and see if surgery it will be needed. I didnt talk with him about orthodontic, I just pop the question there to the assistant. But I know she is not the specialist there and maybe her “honest view” bring me down.
But is a good idea about get a second opinion after finish this first phase and I will try do my best next week in my checkup and have a little more chat with my dentist.

Is the freezing more like feeling too afraid / intimidated to ask or is it more forgetting what you wanted to ask?

Well done. I recently had two extractions and was terrified but like you, I got through it, the dentist had no trouble with them and the assistant held my hand when I got shaky.

Do you think you can try and take one step at a time? I know it's really hard because I too have lots of unknowns about future dental work. It really isn't that easy for anyone to be that definite about what may happen. I feel for you with the news that you may have more things to deal with but for now dealing with healing is something that might be good to focus on. Be kind to yourself if you can.

Sounds like you really went with all your courage,no pain, and your dentist being encouraging and talking you through it .Sorry about the disappointing comments from the assistant. I'm with the rest. take one step at a time, you never know..You are gaining some real positive momentum in your dental journey with a dentist that has been good with you. I hope you get the rest straighted out little by little.. You are courageous!!

Is more afraid, afraid of the answer. ☹️

Thanks for you advise, You are right, I was doing one step at a time. What next? And that’s it. Focusing in the moment. I guess I not prepared emotionally to deal with the big picture of this journey. Unfortunetly I cant change all these years that I didnt look for help, and I have to deal with the consequences of my decisions. Last thing no more questions to assistant if I want to know something go straight to my dentist! ? thanks again is always reconfortable have people to talk about all this fears and have all this support.

Thank you for your kind words! It means a lot for me in these moments.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the assistant and the dentist are not specialists on the subject. Maybe seeing an orthodontist would give you a better view of what are your options since they have the specialist training and knowledge in the domain.

Sounds like your nurses answer already was the worst you could picture so it only can get better.

Would it be an idea to formulate the questions in a certain way so that your dentist knows how to approach the answer, something like: "One of my dental goals is getting braces and I would feel absolutely devastated if this wouldn't be possible for any reason. Could you help me find ways for me to get straight teeth?" Or letting him know how you feel about asking: "I would like to ask you about braces but really worry about the answer.." Or maybe asking vie email instead of person?

If you do not feel up to talk to your dentist about this at all then it's fine as well, maybe you need some more time, but do not allow your mind to say goodbye to straight teeth until you talked to someone who has the answers..
