Hey looking for advice
I got first stage root canal on Wednesday with a temporary filling to go back in 2 weeks time.
I'm getting a dull ache it's not throbbing though because this is my first root canal I wanted to check is this normal?
It's not sore to bite down either, though I'm trying to avoid it as best as I can as it's a front tooth.
Will the ache settle down over the next week? Or what signs should I watch for to be concerned.
I looked at it the temporary filling is still intact

It can be depending on various factors. I would watch the pain and see if it increases and you start to have major swelling/fever/ pus. I was pretty sore a few days after I had my front four uppers done, but nothing unmanageable without a little Ibuprofen

It's fairly normal to get some tenderness immediately after root canal treatment, there is often a bit of localised inflammation around the very tip of the root (the apex) caused by the treatment. It should be easily managed by simple pain killers and should get better in 2-3 days.

We have an excellent overview on root canals here: https://www.dentalfearcentral.org/faq/root-canal/

@Gordon I was experiencing it as a dull ache/sensitivity till today and than I randomly got like a ten second throbbing not sure if its from the tooth or the gum above it surely with there being no nerve it wouldn't be nerve pain? I'm panicking as I'm really not wanting to loose the tooth. 2nd stage is supposed to be next Wednesday.

Should I ring the dentist again perhaps to rule out infection?
Also I felt nothing in the first stage only when it came to him putting in some solution that felt like a real intense pressure pain, was that normal or would that indicate infection?

No, it doesn't work like that. It's from the tiny area at the apex of the root, a small influx of white blood cells will cause a rise in pressure in the area which causes the pain.

<Smartass Answer> It's already infected, that's why you're getting root treatment :-) If it's getting worse, call them, if it's not then waiting till Wednesday is fine.

That's the trouble with not being able to converse face to face, important information like that isn't always available... it sounds like some of the antiseptic fluid penetrated through the apex into the apical tissues.
That's probably why you've had the discomfort since. It's nothing to get worked up over and will get better fairly quickly.

Hi gordon quick wee update, i managed to get into my dentist today, hes giving me 5 days antibotics he explained its like residual infection similar to what you said there so he said amoxcillion should really take care of it, though he pushed the second stage back 2 weeks, instead of going ahead next week, he tapped the tooth it was tender but the last time he did that with the nerve i actually jolted on the seat so im thinking thats another reassuring sign.
Thanks for your help and reassurance

Thanks for the update.
