Its been a while (pain)

Long story but:

A few years ago I was walking around and it was windy, someone how I ended up biting down on a rock and cracking the last molar on the upper left side of my mouth. It didn't bother me at first and since I have a huge fear of the dentist I let it go.

2 years ago It started hurting, I dealt with the pain and it eventually went away. Recently I was eating and bit down wrong on it and now its hurting again and I'm pretty sure its infected.

The reason for my fear of the dentist comes from when I was a kid and had a tooth infection while visiting my sister in TX during Thanksgiving, it took us 2 days to find a dentist that would work on me and he wasn't the greatest, ever since then I haven't gone.

I found a dentist locally that advertises sedation dentistry, and deals with people who have the same fear I do. Twice last week I picked up the phone to call but hung up, I guess I need to grow up and call and make an appointment and get it done and over with.

Reason I'm starting this thread is I have other teeth I'm sure are in need of repair but I would really like to do this first and see how it goes, They can't make me do something I don't want can they?

Also with an infected tooth what could I expect? I already decided on the extraction because half the tooth is already gone, but will they give pain killers for after and antibiotics?

When you find a dentist that seems like he'd be good for you, email him! Don't call! I couldn't call to set up my appointment. I hung up on them when they answered and emailed them instead. They called me back, but I sent another email saying that talking to them would be hard to do and that I could only email them. You could try doing that! They were really nice about me needed to email instead of call.

You can definetley talk to them once you get there and tell them you want to take baby steps and do what's bothering you first and then do other stuff later. As I feel unable to communicate well, I wrote a giant list of things I want to say that I'm bringing to my appointment tomorrow. One of them includes "taking baby steps and dealing with my tooth that's in pain FIRST and other stuff later, if I feel comfortable."

I will try sending an email tonight, if not my mom agreed to set up the appointment for me and go with. This is something I want to do after all of these years of not going.

Update!

My mom called the only sedation dentist in my area. They don't do the "Laughing gas" as I'd hoped for. Instead they do a pill that has a similar effect. This cost $400 on top of the x ray and extraction.

I don't have dental insurance, should I opt out of having the pill and just go in and do the extraction? From what they said on the phone the pill doesn't reduce pain its to make you more relaxed.

Hi Baller

I had teeth out without any kind of sedation, gas, injection, pills or otherwise so I can't tell you what it would be like on them.. I can tell you what it is like with just numbing injections.

What they do is inject you a couple of times, maybe more so you're fully numb.

Then they wiggle your tooth, wiggle wiggle wiggle, out it comes, takes a veryyyy very short amount of time to pull out a tooth, you would really be surprised!

The actual fear and build up of having it done is a million times worse than the procedure itself which is very quick, like less than a minute to pull it, and it's completely painless.

After you have it done they will pack it with some cotton, give you an aftercare kit + also proscribe you some pain killers and antibiotics if you need them.

I personally didn't get given antibiotics because I didn't have an infection, & also apart from being sore after I didn't have any pain and didn't need to take any pain killers!

So all in all, it wasn't worth me putting up with months of on and off agonizing pain for something that could have been done sooner in a couple of minutes, I'm sure after you will feel the same.
