To try to engage my new dentist, as he seems a little introverted, I asked why he went into dentistry and he said "because he wanted to do surgeries but didn't want to go to medical school".. well.. not sure that is super anxious friendly but he answered. I guess now I know where his passions are. My previous dentist said he was a teacher for biology at the university and notice the dental students and staff were really "cool" and loved hanging out with them so decided to go to dental school. He was very engaging, funny and anxious friendly

Curious if any of you all have asked why and what were some of the driving reasons ? :) @Gordon @drhirst @Dr. Daniel @Dr Niall @Mike Gow and any other dentists on here I've missed. :) Of course there are some pretty great stories in the interview section on why some of the dentists here listed did go into it too :)

My stock answer is that I got really drunk one night and woke up in dental school :-)

Serious answer, I liked working with my hands and generally working with people, I was always interested in medical/surgical stuff but I also wanted something that involved sensible hours, so medicine was out.

Thanks Gordon, You know I was reading your interview with NIkoleta the other day and saw that first part , it made me chuckle but you have such a great story of your journey and heart to all your patients and everyone you help! I Loved the Elvis teeth story.. so sweet ..

Nikoleta is a great interviewer and an excellent writer, she made me much more interesting than I really am. The "Elvis" mom gave me a lovely little sculpture when I left Ayrshire, I still have it in my wee study here.

Omg Gordon, this is truly a one of a kind gift!! What an honor.. how cool!!! Thank you for sharing..That's incredible what thought and art..I agree, Nikoleta really is awesome! I enjoyed all her interviews!!

Have not asked my current dentist but my former dentist said she loved working with her hands (sculpting, sketching, etc) and liked the artistry part of dentistry. She also said that she loved her dentist growing up and then took a dental assisting class in high school or early college (can’t remember which) and fell in love with it so she decided to become a dentist.
