yep I googled...can someone turn off my google?
i'm spazzing that my scan if i can do it will be a waste as in poor results leading to no implant.
it's been 3 or 4.5 years since my tooth was pulled....typically how fast does bone degrade. Am i setting myself up for failure or am i most likely still ok.

my dentist would have had some inclining that i might not be a good candidate from my regular xrays so far.
i'm not even sure i can handle bone grafting if they plan on sending me somewhere to harvest it. why do I have to google? now i am even more freaked out because there are apparently 2 ways to do this...one that requires opening the gum tissue first and one that doesn't and I don't know which it would be...
and how do they typically keep your mouth open? i panic with the dental dam. i'm used to a bite block but i just saw a cheek retractor in a video i prob shouldn't have watched ummm that's prob going to be a major trigger. do they always use those? i'll be awake for this single tooth. i think i'd rather have a fingercpulling my lip away than that thing. i know it's stupid. but hey i was left alone with a dental dam and i seriously questioned if i could get through the window my panic level kinda escalates when you start practically gagging me.

ps anything you recommend to help improve the bone asap? besides calcium and D vegan friendly options would be most awesome.

Nothing you can do to make your bone better on your own but always good taste to eat healthy
As to grafting you are right there are different ways. It is very possible to not have to harvest from you and still get excellent outcome. So they left you a gagger anxious patient alone?? Bad call on their part.
As to your treatment I would consider IV sedation for the grafting but then I looked at your pictue and wondered how old you were. If too young then not good for an implant until later.
In general you can usually build back bone but the worse it gets the more expensive and fewer dentists can do it.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

I'm 34 diet is vegan organic and nothing processed. I run 30 to 50 miles a week and lift 3xs a week. This is being done with just a local at my regular office. I have control issues I'm not sure I'd be good at IV sedation either. I actually would be more terrified if they wanted to send me out to an oral surgeon instead.
It's been 3 or 4 yrs since the tooth was extracted. i guess from my regular xrays it must look somewhat do-able my regular dentist even said she'd block out her schedule and sit in there. I'm not sure why she is being that kind. i don't deserve that but it's the only reason I'm considering it.

will i be able to oil pull after this is done? or better how many weeks would i need to wait 2? if im gentle and don't swish too hard?

and thank you for answering as for them leaving me alone i am the sort that might look somewhat ok on the outside...then you come back and my nails are dug so deep in the back of my hand i can't get them unclenched and thet leave scabby bloody marks that bruise when i do . i can't even bring myself to do the hand signal thing.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

will i be allowed a thyroid collar during the cbct scans?

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

scan has been moved to tomorrow morning so i guesd it really doesn't matter. choices are over. They are working me in so i need to be as compliant and easy as can be...and not cry, shake or pass out this time.
help.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

Your choices are not over, you *always*, *always* have a choice.

What this scan can do for you, though, is get you the information that you need. That then allows you to make a properly informed choice about the surgery - and that's a choice too, always!

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

oh Tink....I'm so scared. Not only will results be my worst nightmare I feel like this is my only option now. and i really am terrified I will be bullied into a lot of things i dont want.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

OK:

1) You don't know yet what the results of the scan will be. Once you have the results, then you will know what you are dealing with and can make decisions. I know it feels like the worst thing possible will definitely happen, but you only have to make it through a few more hours and then you will know.

2) If you don't want to go through with implant surgery, then say no. That's how consent works, you have a *choice* about this. You don't have to be bullied into anything, and I have to say that from what I've heard about your dentist from you, I really don't think they're trying to bully you into anything or would want to. They seem quite kind really!

3) Are you *certain* this is your only option? What is that certainty based on? Have you discussed other options for replacing the tooth with your dentist, or is this based on what you have found out by googling?

You got this

You are always, ALWAYS in control, and you always have a choice.

You know, I think you *can* do it, should you choose to. But it needs to be your choice, and if/when it comes to it, you need to be doing it because you have decided it's the best thing for you, not to please anybody else.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

I think I replied in my support thread but yeah scan looked good to my dentist. Assuming her partner that does the implants agrees then apparently it looks super easy as in if she wanted to start doing them herself...she'd pick me to start with. lol I'll take it. I don't think she would have said anything if she wasn't sure he was going to agree. So no grafting needed I guess...unless they see something they don't like when they get in there. Let's home that doesn't happen.

Thanks for all your support. Scheduled for the 17th...of june.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

sooo i really don't want to start new threads but how does the numbing procedure go for an implant in comparision to a crown or root canal. will it feel really different. i'm really freaking out that i won't regain full function. Only ever worried about that with my wisdom teeth. Like to the point of if i thought i could handle that level of pain for the amout of time it takes i'd go without if they let me.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

Let me share what I do.
This is a lower tooth near a nerve. When placing an implant in the bottom back area there are 2 very important concerns. First is to avoid the nerve and secondly is to avoid drilling threw the tongue side which is sometimes easy to do because of how it curves in the back. So I only numb the tissue on top so if the drill gets near the nerve the patient will let me know. Other dentists will numb everything.

yikes?? does it not hurt when drilling through bone? i have no memory of this tooth being pulled soni have nothing to base anything on....and through the tongue side eek. hopefully that 3d scan would prevent both hitting the nerve and going thru.
thank you for answering.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

no pain

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

wow really? then i guess i won't know the difference
here's hoping my nerves are super buried though...kind of wish i had asked her to show me the scan and point out stuff maybe i wouldn't be asking so many questions

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

Hey -

Yep, I can verify that drilling through bone doesn't hurt (really!). I once had an intraosseous injection of local anaesthetic, which involves drilling a tiny hole in the bone and then putting the anaesthetic through there. Honestly, it was fine, no pain at all, comfortdentist is telling you the truth.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

it sounds like it should hurt. I probably will be digging holes in whatever is in my hand waiting for it to hurt the whole time.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

Yeah, I know that feeling all too well!

I think (note: I'm not a dentist so I could be just making stuff up at this point) that it has to do with your bones not being wired up with nerves in the same way that your teeth are.

Re: likelihood of needing bone grafting please tell me i probably will be ok??

It still sounds awful but at least it"d wear off quickly and i would know if my face was still normal. gah i wish it was over. I seriously have this visual of the guy holding my head still like it's a 2×4 and drilling the post in. Logically i know it doesn't happen butttttttttt...

ahhh are my neighboring teeth going to hurt. could they damage them. i'm already paranoid about my crowned teeth. and how are they going to make a crown when there is nothing to make an accurate impression of. This is the stuff that happens when i work overnight by myself.

seriously freaking out that i will run or go back to my normal high impact stuff after a day or two like they said i could and the post will get loose or start shifting around and never heal...or something simple that i do like oil pulling will never be able to be done again.

logically i know they wouldn't tell me i could if they were worried but still...i feel like it'll be months before i can resume normal activity and by then i'll lose my fitness level
