I have been trying to desperately find a dentist who will extract a broken molar, mainly retained root, under general anaesthetic. I have been to three separate dentist in three years, the last visit just yesterday. I seem unable to make them understand that sedation is not an option and I am so not interested in counselling which I believe is an utter waste of time!!! If anyone has any information about where I could possibly get this help I would be so grateful for any information. I don't care how far I might have to travel

Hi you could try asking your GP to refer you to hospital for them to have a look and see if they can help.

You could also ring around dental schools as they take patients when they have room and see if that is possible. Your own dentist should be able to refer you to someone that does extractions with GA.

I understand what you are saying but having a tooth out isn't as bad as you might think it is if it is done by an understanding dentist. There is no yanking or pulling or anything and you don't feel a thing. It is over so quickly you wouldn't believe it.

If you think it isn't possible to build a trust with your dentist to allow them to do the removal then have you looked for a private dentist practice that would be able to extract the tooth for you under GA. The problem is that not many do it using GA anymore.

I know Leeds Dental Hospital take patients at certain times and if travel is no problem maybe give them a ring but you may have a dental hospital nearer to you.

Have you tried Acomb Dental, in York?

I just wanted GA and no IV sedation as well, so totally get how you feel. But had IV there and it was an amazing experience. And they showed me that going to the dentist is utterly painless, these days. Truly.

You could ask your GP to refer you to the dental people at York Hospital - I've been there with two of my sons, for extractions prior to orthodontics. But TBH they were only referred there because they were slightly complicated extractions. I don't know if they do it for adults and for reasons other than orthodontics?

But Acomb are ace. I've been going there a few years now and had three different dentists - all of whom have been brilliant.

I was at a dentist this week who advertise GA extraction, travelled to Billingham only to be patronised and told he didn't think I needed Ga and would do it under Conscious sedation today and get tooth out.
Needless to say, he simply wasn't listening and I cancelled the appointment within 8 hours!
I don't seem to be able to make anyone understand how terrifying I find the prospect of extraction. The last dentist to treat me had me taking copious quantities of Valium just to get me in for a filing!
I have now rung Dr to see if they can help.

I was with ACOMB practice until Carolyn Rickleton left. She had worked with me for years building trust. I have now seen 3 different dentists in fact 4 because I saw Carolyn's replacement and didn't have any confidence in any of them. I am back to where I was years ago, not able to contemplate treatment.

I've seen two different dentists there since Carolyn left, and both were fine. Now have the latest new one and despite not being a phobic specialist, he actually took more time to talk to me about my fears - than any dentist I have ever had even including the wonderful Carolyn. And did an utterly painless extraction - without even IV sedation as I felt I could trust him. I think the two other dentists in the practice offer IV. PM me if you want more info. He's very new at the practice so probably not the one you saw.

Really,with IV anything is a total breeze. If I ever had to have something complicated or scary I wouldn't hesitate to have it.

In the meanwhile, maybe see if your GP could help you with a referral to the maxillofacial dept (I think that's what they call it) at York Hospital. My son had a whole bunch of extractions - overcrowded mouth - just after xmas, under GA, and he seemed untraumatised. I've had IV and GA -and would actually say IV is a much less traumatic experience. You won't believe how out of it you are.

Hi I understand how you feel. I have spent my life terrified of visiting the dentist, even the ones I felt comfortable with but I did get to have treatment I needed. I like you got to trust someone only to see them leave and have to start again trying to find someone.

I am now comfortable going for treatment again but any change in how things go can send me back. At the moment I am seeing a specialist at the hospital for my jaw and my trusted dentist is away having a baby so I am feeling very unstable again. I am telling you this because although I feel nervous I am not quite as bad as I was about 4 years back, but I understand how you can be sent back years and all the old feelings can come right back and have you a shaking mess.

I think the advice you are getting from Poodleoo is excellent, they know the practice you have attended and know the new dentists there.

I think as hard as it is you would find it much better to try and build up a trust with a dentist and be able to have work done without needing GA. It would be a lot easier in the long run. From what I understand sedation is very good and most people don't even remember having work done.

I understand if you feel that this isn't possible for you but please try a dentist at the practice you already know for your other dental needs like the check ups etc... you never know it might work out for the better for you. I hope you have luck with the GP referring you to hospital.
