My worst Fears!! My 4 front teeth have to be extracted....

I posted on this board a month or so ago, regarding my gum disease. It appears that i have an extremely angry gum disease which had resulted in loose and out of line teeth. So bad infact that im going to loose all front (top & bottom) teeth.
Well after alot of visits to my local dentist, demanding to be seen yet again as i was not happy, i kept on breaking out in what appeared to be blisters on my gum (would leak some sort of puss) but my dentist kept giving antibiotics and leaving me to get on with it... Every time one infection would clear another would appear on a different tooth. Well i have now been told that i have to have my 4 front teeth out (upper)

I went back to the dentist and seen a different guy on the off chance, he was so shocked at the condition of my teeth at such a young age. He asked why i had not started treatment yet, (he could see on his computer system that i had been attending) i told him that the previous guy that i had been seeing just kept sending me away will pills and mouth wash. He was so shocked and told me that the 'guy' in question had been struck off their books and would not be returning........ So it looks as tho he was delaying treatment as he knew what was in store for him!!

Anyhow, i am going to have my top 4 teeth out on 6th Oct and I'm sooo scared. The dentist wanted me to be toothless for a couple of months to allow my gums to fully heal so that dentures would fit correctly. But as you can imagine, i don't want to have no front teeth for a long period of time.

In the end he gave me this dental plan:
6th Oct - Extraction of 4 top front teeth
8th Oct - Return for impressions
15th (Approx) - Denture fitting

I requested to have the denture as soon as possible, dentist did explain that it will most likely come loose as i have not allowed enough healing time. But can always go back for re-fit.

The thing that is most concerning me is having no teeth for a week or so, i guess there is nothing i can do about this. but I'm honestly cr*pping myself....

I have even thought about buying a medical face mask to cover up my mouth, so people can't see into my mouth, but i guess this will only make matters worse.

It looks like i am going to have to lock myself up, 24/7 for the week, With 2 small children, this will be extremely difficult...

Hi Louise,
I can so sympathize with you. I am having my four front teeth removed on Oct 27th. Implants will be placed at the same time. I then have to wait 6-8 months for them to heal. During this time I will have a metal cast partial. I have had the impressions done and it will be for my immediate use. I will take it with me to the implant surgeon and it will be placed in my mouth as soon as he finishes. I go in with my own teeth and come out with new ones in the way of the partial.
At no time will I be without teeth unless the partial needs adjusting. I have an appt with my cosmetic dentist the next day and he will be available the day of my surgery, if needed.
I'm not sure why you can't have immediate dentures (partial). Ask your dentist. It is true that your gums will shrink but that would happen anyway and would only require an adjustment in about 3 months or so. Having teeth right away is worth it to me.
Ask you dentist about an immediate partial or at least a flipper that can be used as soon as your teeth are out.

Thanks for you're fast responce.

My dentist is from Poland and i find it quite hard to understand him at times. I actuall had to call the dentist and ask to speak to the dental nurse for her to explain things to me again...

I did ask if i could have immediate teeth, but i was told no. Im not sure why this is?? Maybe i should call and ask? I remember him saying something about 'not being able to take impressions of the teeth that will be removed' does that make sense?

I'm at my whits end, can't understand the guy so i come away not knowing what is happening!!!

I can also sympathise with you. I already have a partial where my 2 canines are and im going in this thuirsday to have an impression to remove my left front tooth(that broke very badly over the weekend) and my 3rd tooth over. (witch is just too far gone to be saved) They also will have a partial ready for me when they are extracted so deffinetly ask them about that. I wish you luck your going to feel so much better once it's done

I'm really looking forward to having 'new' teeth and a hopefully lovely smile.

I'm so consious of my smile at the moment, and people around me notice this. I'm only 25 and extremely run down with it all... I went to see the dentist last week who wanted me back the following day to have the teeth out, it was a big shock and i left soooo worried. I had a family event on sat just gone and didn't want to go with no teeth
So i called and arranged for 6th Oct.

Here's what my dentist is doing for me. He took impressions already. They will make a wax up partial from them. Then they knock the front teeth out A metal cast partial will be made from that mold. I will try the partial without teeth for fit. That will happen next time I go to see him - Oct 2.
I then pick out my teeth color. After about two weeks I can go pick up my new partial with my new teeth in it. I will take that with me to the implant guy that will extract my four front teeth and place 4 implants. He will then place the partial in my mouth before I leave his office.
After about three months I will have it relined, if necessary. That will depend on how much my gums shrink. I will use this partial until my implants are ready for an implant supported bridge.
You can get a "flipper" to use instead of a metal cast partial, too. They are a bit harder to use i.e. sleeping with them and eating with them in, but there is no reason you should have to be without teeth.
Your dentist should oblige you on this.

I'm having all my top teeth removed and 4 on the bottom on the same day as you ! fingers crossed i dont bottle it ! my dentist didnt want to give me an immediate denture she said it would get loose quick which i accepted but i really did want teeth straight away.
Anyhow after a few posts here and speaking to my oral surgeon i called my dentist and insisted i had immediate dentures made .she agreed !
I went for impressions last wed and have to go back this wed for a try with some wax mould ? then fingers cross i collect the teeth 10 days later then off to the hospital on the monday for GA and then its all done ! if only it was that easy,really dont want to think about it at the moment.

Hi Loiuse i totally understand what you are saying about being without teeth,i had a lot of teeth removed in July,i am going back in october to sort out about dentures and a bridge a need,i have been without my teeth for about 8 weeks now as my dentists wanted my gums to heel properly.

It has been hard but i have managed even with four children on summer holidays,it is okay i have managed to learn to speak without showing much at all of the horror in my mouth

After all day of 'Thinking' i'm going to call the Dentist tomorrow as ask to speak wit the dental nurse (as i can't understand the Polish dentist)

I will ask if there is anything they can do to help me so i don't have to go without teeth... I'm only 25 and this would be a knightmare.

Hi Everyone,

I promised to update this post so here goes,

Today i had my front top front teeth removed, a week earlier than planned as i had bumped my front tooth and it had become very loose as was causing me so much trouble, so i opted to have the teeth removed earlier.

I was petrified, but so glad that the hard part is now over and done with. I have to wait 10 days for healing and swelling to go dow, then return to dentist for impressions.

I was so shocked at the state of the root area of the extracted teeth, they were covered in gunk... not a nice sight at all.

I find it very hard to talk to my dentist, he seems to be rather abrupt so i choose not to speak to him much.
So i will ask here what i needed to ask him... (silly i know)

Anyway, would it be a good idea to swill my mouth with warm salt water to help keep my gums clean and to help heeling?

I have been left with no front teeth at all, my top lip sinks inside my mouth, leaving me looking like an old lady... i was thinking of buying some disposable masks to wear as i am so embarrased about having no teeth at all. I did ask about have temp teeth but he refused saying i needed to let my gums heel.

I do feel much better after having the teeth removed, but i have to wait a long time with no teeth, any advice would be appreciated..

Warm salt water rinses post extraction are a good idea - it's so simple and handy and it can do so much good! I never understood why people kept mentioning them until I did it myself and boy it felt good on the extraction site! You shouldn't do them right after, there is a waiting time - 24-48 hrs, I believe, I did them 48 hrs after the extractions and kept it up till my stiches were removed a week later.
