Hi everyone, wondering if you could share some experiances and kind words. After 6 years of agony i finaly got the courage to make an appointment at the dentist! I have appt next week now bt im scard
d to death. I needed 6 teeth out years ago so i know i need alot of work done. I haute 3 badly rotten tem
eth and 2 have completly rotten and gum has grown over and the roots are underneath. Would they sedate me atall or knock me out as i really can not let them inject my moth and that. What are my options? I am so scared of all this but got 2 get it done. Hope someone can give some advice! X

Just thought id add im on nhs and getin into a rite mess thinkin bout this cnnstantly on my mind cant sleep!

Are you afraid of the shots? Those really only sting for a second. When I had my extraction, I winced for the first couple of shots for a second and never felt the rest. At all! The actual extraction was really quick and DID NOT HURT! Can they give you something to just relax you? I took 2 Xanax before the appt and they gave me N20 (gas) and I was stoned and didn't care what they were doing. i swear I think i fell asleep for a minute! They were actually annoying me when they talked to me! I have read here that it is actually easier to get a tooth out that is just roots so that is good news! I was petrified about the extraction but once they started I knew it was almost over by then and that made me feel better just knowing that. YOU CAN DO THIS! The experience was a fraction of what my mind made it out to be. :bear:

I, on the other hand, would rather have a thousand shots than get knocked out! Isn't that funny? :giggle:

Have you ever had the shots before, or are you scared for the first time?

Are you going to go private or NHS, the first visit is only a consultation, they usually want a look so they can see what you need doing. You can ask them to just use a mirror and not the probe (the pokey tool) they may want to take an x ray, none of this hurts. If you explain what you are frightened of and why if you know the dentist will help you get the treatment you need. If they are not understanding and you feel uncomfortable ( apart from the obvious) find another dentist.

I think you will be surprised how understanding and considerate the dentists of today are, they want to help you and help you get a healthy mouth and a smile you can be proud of.

Injections do not hurt if a gel called topical is used on your gums first, this is put on a roll and held on your gum, this numbs the gum, then if the dentist injects you really slowly, you won't feel it, at the most it will be a 1 second sting, honestly, I have had a lot of injections this way and I was terrified of them but not any more. I do feel nervous and I still sometimes shake when I have to go but I am not terrified now.

I wish you luck with your appointment. Your mouth might not be as bad as you think. :bear: :grouphug: :bear:

Hi Anna9

You poor thing, being in such pain. It is good you are going to get it sorted out tho' and the relief will be fantastic.

If you are on the NHS then that won't cover sedation. I initially started on the NHS but because I was in such a state, he referred me to a sedation dentist, but that was for iv sedation and I would have to pay for that. I decided to get a third opinion, and took the advice given me so kindly on here and went to another dentist who offered sedation, but also had an interest in phobic patients - best decision I made :)

I am not sure if an NHS dentist can refer you to a hospital to get the teeth removed under general anesthetic, but you don't get if you don't ask, so I say go for it.

I wish you well, and let us know how you get on.

Kim
