Open bite

I’m 61 years old. Have developed an open bite over the last few years, I believe due to periodontitis. Is it absolutely necessary to have this fixed? I have so many other mental and dental issues to deal with.

I should have mentioned that the open bite is fairly large — I can push my tongue partway through it. Will my dentist be able to get proper X-rays of my teeth when my bite is so bad? Supposed to have appointment tomorrow and am panicking for many reasons. Thank you.

No reason they can't get any x-rays they need, it's not a problem at all.
