Hello - I was wondering if it is to be expected to get pain after crown prep. I had decay between two crowns and the back one (upper molar) was prepped today with a temp.

I felt no pain before the treatment or during except a very slight discomfort when the dentist said he needed to clean right below the gum.

I felt quite wobbly after the appointment, an hour in the chair and have had some issues with jaw pain recently, so thought maybe it was that. The anaesthetic has now worn off and I am quite uncomfortable, feels swollen. Do you think this is the gum? I think I can feel the cement a little with my toungue and seem to remember similar soreness once before that eventually calmed down.

Dentist did say its possible tooth/root will react but I would know about it and he didnt think so, the treatment went well and there was less decay than he thought.

So, any suggestions as to whether this is entirely normal and when to expect gum/tooth to recover and anything I can do to help it? I genuinely feel a bit battered and bruised (metaphorically). Lower jaw is aching a bit too.

Thank you. I really wasnt expecting it to hurt, so was surprisingly brave this morning when I went :)

I'd expect a bit of discomfort after a big procedure like that, maybe a bit of sensitivity around the temp. Take some painkillers and rest up for a while tonight and it should be better in the morning.

Thank you, it is easing this evening, I just didn't quite expect it to be so involved, I have no idea why not! I have had it done before.

He did have to dig around the gum quite a bit, I could sense it (ouch) So hopefully it is the gum mainly. See how it is in the morning.

Thanks again

Firstly, thank you for all the great information and support that I have gleaned from the site.

After my mouth recovered from the crown prep all was well during the 2 week wait for the crown fit, a little bit of sensitivity at times to temperatures which the dentist said was ok.

I had the crown fitted this last Wednesday, I did have a local and it was a little sore for a really short time after the aneasthetic wore off, but on the whole really good, the crown bite felt normal etc I have come to the end of a long road of treatment and hope this crown is good to go - dentist said after the prep when I asked about potential problem with the root, he said he didn't expect there to be a problem, but if there was, I would probably know about it very soon after the prep. He had cleared the decay between the crowned tooth and another, it was deep (digging around my gums) but all good.

Today though I am noticing a similar sensitivity as with the temp crown - cold only I think, very short lived. I never asked the dentist at the end of the appointment whether this might be expected - is this common? It has been years since I had the crowns fitted and cannot remember.

Thoughts and information appreciated.

Thank you
