Please advise on my crown problem-so upset.

I'd get a second opinion now, particularly if the dentist has told you that you have an open margin. That sounds a bit odd. The varnish sounds like the stuff they put on to stop sensitivity. When I had it done once it was yellowy orange and a bit icky.

No no! It wasn't the dentist who said I had an open margin, it was a friend I happened to be talking to (not a dentist I know, I know!) who had a similar problem, it sounds identical. No, the dentist said that the ledge I could feel was a bit of cement sticking out of the join. He filed it off and then put that varnish on, and yes, that's the stuff, yellowy orangy, sticky and tastes revolting! But it certainly calmed the nerve. Unfortunately I brushed it away and it's beginning to niggle again.

It took about 6 weeks for my bite to adjust after my crown and then everything kind of fell into place, I would be careful with the filing down I opted for minimal filing as your teeth really do move to acomodate any changes

I went for a second opinion....

One crown is unacceptable because it has been filed back to expose the zirconium layer and is also a poor fit. The other one is unacceptable because it is the x-ray shows gaps at the margins and there is also debris attatched to it, probably cement.

Both are poor quality crowns and to quote my lovely new dentist, "you paid premium prices for NHS crowns"

Have appointment with old dentist on tuesday (he thinks he's having "another look") where I will be looking for a refund.

And with a bit of luck I'll be able to post in the "success stories" section soon. Though I'll be having my treatment without sedation this time. I have to say that this whole experience has put me off sedation... I'll be taking some very deep breaths over the next month or two, while I get these crowns sorted.
