I'd get a second opinion now, particularly if the dentist has told you that you have an open margin. That sounds a bit odd. The varnish sounds like the stuff they put on to stop sensitivity. When I had it done once it was yellowy orange and a bit icky.
No no! It wasn't the dentist who said I had an open margin, it was a friend I happened to be talking to (not a dentist I know, I know!) who had a similar problem, it sounds identical. No, the dentist said that the ledge I could feel was a bit of cement sticking out of the join. He filed it off and then put that varnish on, and yes, that's the stuff, yellowy orangy, sticky and tastes revolting! But it certainly calmed the nerve. Unfortunately I brushed it away and it's beginning to niggle again.
