I had a crack drilled out of a tooth and a temp over the top which fell off twice so finally had a metal temp on. The tooth throbbed underneath so my dentist gave me amoxicillin and said I need a RCT. next to this tooth is a gap but a tooth nearby has started hurting. Could this be referred pain? I am very anxious about the procedure to the extent I havn't been sleeping. 16 years ago I had an RCT that went wrong. I kept returning to the dentist who told me nothing was wrong and kept giving me antibiotics. Finally I ended up at the local dental hospital where they found I had an infection right below the gum line so they had to remove the tooth which took a long time. Ever since I have been scared of any dental procedures.
This is a new dentist recommended by a friend who has gone to her for years and she is aware of my previous issues.

So, how did you get on?

My dentist couldnt clean the 3rd root canal so has referred me to a specialist. In the meantime she cleaned out 2 canals and has packed in a strong temp filling. She has given me metronidazole just in case the tooth flares up but said try to avoid getting an infection but didn't really say how beyond not chewing very hard things like nuts or sticky things that could pull out the filling.Any help?

Hey pinkjude,
There is nothing you can actually do yourself to avoid getting an infection, so I would not worry about it. If you do get one from the uncleaned 3rd canal, then the metronidazole should take care of it.
Your situation is not uncommon, and your dentist has done the right thing to ensure you stay comfortable.
When you next see him or her ask them what they meant and let me know please, as I would love to know what magic trick they are thinking of!!!

Best wishes

So my dentist couldnt finish the root canal as she cant access the 3rd chamber so referred me to a specialist. The specialist will see me Friday to hopefully continue the process. However last wednesday the tooth started hurting like a throbbing and when I looked I noticed a black spot on the tooth that wasnt there before. I am now concerned that means something has happened to that tooth and root canal cannot be continued.
The other tooth under a gold crown which also hurts occasionally she couldn't find anything wrong with but did find a deep pocket behind it which she said needs cleaning out by a hygienist. She queried whether the pain I have is actually gum pain and not tooth pain .
I am very anxious about going on Friday but know I need to get this resolved.
Any thoughts?

I doubt it, nothing you can see on the surface of the tooth will have much bearing on the root canal treatment.

Makes sense to me. It's usually best to treat the obvious stuff before looking for more exotic issues.

thankyou. RCT cancelled as dentist has to self isolate

I am scheduled a deep clean on a deep pocket of 5mm behind a tooth with a crown. Its very annoying because I have seen the hygienist every 6 months at my previous dentist and she never picked up on an issue nor did the dentist. My new dentist sent me to a specialist as this tooth has been grumbling and it was she who noticed the deep pocket and referred me back to my dentist for an hygienist appointment. Will it hurt and will I need antibiotics? I ask because some people have given me horror stories about how much it bled, the immense pain for 7 days and the need to take antibiotics afterwards. The rest of my mouth is having a normal clean

No it shouldn't hurt. No you won't need antibiotics afterwards.

Thanks for the reassurance

@Gordon You were right. The hygienist probed first and it was very painful where the deep pocket was so she numbed that area first. She was gentle but thorough. She showed me which tepe brushes to use on which teeth, gave me other advice and will see me again in 3 months.

Good, glad to hear that it went well and the hygienist was properly gentle with you. There's really no need for discomfort in dentistry.
