Resorped premolar scheduled for extraction

First premolar in my lower jaw (#21). Yearly xray saw what appeared to be resorption just below the gum line on the root adjacent to #22. It looks like a half-moon bite has been taken out of the tooth. Obviously nothing to do except what is being done tomorrow -- extraction & bone graft in preparation for an implant. Between #21 and#22 is a buccal exostosis that is being removed at the same time. I have great faith in the periodontist that has been treating me for over a decade so not really concerned about the procedure even though this will be my first extraction. Ugh.

My anxiety is stemming from what could have caused the tooth to resorp. I've never had braces or injured my mouth. I don't have ongoing periodontal issues/infections. I'm just worried if without knowing what caused this tooth to resorp will another tooth start to resorp? The exostosis has been there for decades. Is it possibly the cause?

Nobody knows for sure, it seems to be just random bad luck in many cases. Sorry this has happened to you.

@Gordon I appreciate the response. I had the tooth extracted/bone graft yesterday without issue. When we got a visual (which I have to admit was kinda interesting, creepy but interesting) the original lesion at the top of the root had expanded in a strip down the complete length of the root. I'm glad I got it out when I did. Just have to go through the long slog of the implant process. Fingers crossed this doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the update. That's quite an unusual pattern, normally it's more like a "bite" out of the root rather than a lengthwise strip.

@Gordon The periodontist had the same reaction about the pattern. Would be interesting to find out why it progressed like that (maybe multiple bites that merged?) but I doubt I'll ever know! Glad that implants are a predictable solution to fill the space. Thanks again.
