Hey so back in October I was having unbelievable pain....went to see a dentist who took an Xray of the tooth and said it was infected and that I'd need a root canal. I was on amoxicyllin and the pain reduced and he said I could leave the tooth and it could reappear or have the procedure done. Now, being scared of the dentist I obviously opted for the former.

Maybe I should mention during the time of this really bad pain I was feeling under the weather/generally ill. Anyway, today it's around 4 months after this and my tooth is 'touch wood' mostly pain free unless I chew down hard on it.

Today, I looked in the mirror and saw an abscess (which didn't hurt , 'touch wood'. I started using coconut oil and think this helped. Anyway, I popped it and blood came out and the taste of pus. I'm wondering is there a way to cure an infection without the root canal procedure and the fact that the abscess appeared months after -should I be worried? Can I leave it until pain comes again? I am worried about the infection spreading...
I feel fine other than this..

Thanks :) :clover:

once a tooth dies the pulp becomes food for bacteria which is what causes the infection and abscess. because the tooth has limited blood supply antibiotics can never fully kill the infection. it will return over and over until you either extract the tooth or get it root canaled. no amount of antibiotics or home remedies can ever make this tooth recover and be healthy again.it is normal that a draining abscess would not be painful. the pain comes from the pressure of infection. when the infection is able to drain through an abscess the pressure is relieved and the pain is gone. you can choose to leave it until the pain returns but there is always the possibility that if you wait too long you will not be able to save the tooth and have to have the extraction. There is a small but possible risk of infection spreading.
