tooth shifting

do teeth shift after having one removed? my mom said that i shouldn't get replacement teeth at my age. what do i do if they shift do i have to call the dentist?

Teeth around the tooth that has been removed can 'shift'. Normally, teeth either side of the space will tilt in towards the space; also teeth from the opposing arch can move into the space. This movement is normally slow and takes years as opposed to months.
