Hi

So I've known for a while that I need to get my wisdom teeth pulled out and I kind of put it on the back burner for 5 years because I'm terrified went to the dentist and they are trying to get me to just do the local freezing and laughing gas but I have a fear of hearing and seeing what's going on and on top of that I don't want to deal with the pain I wanted to go to sleep but I was told they'd have to stick a tube down my throat and that's not really something I want so I'm considering IV sedation if anybody can give me some feedback or tips on your experiences I'd be very grateful

Best dental experience of my life was getting a wisdom tooth removed on IV sedation, was vaguely aware of something happening, no pain, lovely walk home with my partner afterwards high as a kite. Spent the rest of the day on the sofa watching tv, no pain, pain never really happens as long as you keep taking the pain meds. Nothing bad happens as long as you follow the instructions. A little difficult to eat for a few days after but that was it then back to normal.

I echo the post above - I’ve had two IV sedations for extractions. I had 3 wisdom teeth extracted under sedation about 6 years ago. The worst bit for me was the cannula in my arm as I’m terrified of needles!
I felt like I’d gone to sleep within about 10 seconds of them popping the cannula in and the next thing I knew I was coming round from sedation and it was all done. Absolutely zero pain, just a bit tricky to eat for a few days as I’d had two upper ones and one lower one done so couldn’t eat on either side.

Then in June this year I had IV sedation to have two upper molars and the one remaining wisdom tooth out. Very similar experience - I remember coming round and saying to the dentist that I needed more sedation as I was fully awake. She replied no you don’t, we’ve woken you up as you’re all done! I was sedated for 40 minutes and it honestly felt like I’d blinked, the time went so quick!

Lovely experiences both times. I’m having 7 teeth out on Wednesday and I’m not at all nervous about the sedation, just the aftermath.

You can do this!

Hello just jumping on this post to ask a question about iv sedation

I’ve got to have iv sedation for 2 extractions and a deep filling… I’m terrified of the sedation.. How long did it take once they stopped the sedation medicine did you “wake up” like you remembered what you was doing and stuff. I’m terrified I won’t ever remember anything ever again. 🙈

@Kirsty123 honestly you will be absolutely fine. I’ve had sedation three times now - the first two were both for wisdom teeth removal (upper and lower left side then a few years later the same on the right side)
I was terrified both times but woke up quite quickly after the procedure and remembered waiting in the dentists and then going home and everything after that.
More recently I had 7 upper teeth removed, two of which were very tricky extractions. This time I needed a bit more sedation as I was insanely anxious about it and don’t remember waiting after the procedure or the journey home. Every time I’ve had sedation I’ve needed to go to sleep as soon as I’ve got home and once I’m awake from my little post sedation nap I’m fully with it - even after a bucketful of sedation like I had last time!
I promise you you’ll be absolutely fine, sedation is a great tool and provides a much nicer experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to have it again and I’m an exceptionally nervous patient!

Iv is amazing you will not know it's even happening .
