Hi,
Due to cigarette and my own negligence, I have today major gum recession and missing teeth at 39. Once I realized the seriousness of this issue, my life evolves around my mouth. In the middle of all that, I am realizing how large the gap on my front teeth are becoming. Since last year, I have developed major social anxiety which is affecting my work. I am so depressed about my teeth, which everyone used to comment on their beauty.

In the last 5 years, I have been planning a 4 months trip around multiple cities. Since the front tooth is worrying so much, which is not very loose I am wondering if I just stay in my room forever.

I saw the website of a periodontist in LA, who is a specialist in gum rejuvenation but my trip is in 1 month and I don't know how much it will cost me for the treatment, specially for someone who doesn't live in LA.

Please, I am sorry for the picture. I don't know what to do....

I heard that they have a procedure where they can "rebuild" your gums somehow. In other words, after you get rid of all infection and do deep cleanings, there is a perio-procedure where they can graft your gums and build them up. I never had it done, but I have heard about it too. I have perio disease but not quite as bad as you do. I would imagine that could be expensive to do though.

Thank you for replying. I asked a periodontist about grafting; he told me that it will not succeed, meaning that it has a chance of failing after some time. I can't believe I am loosing my teeth....

Just wanted to say I'm in the EXACT same boat...same age (well almost...I'm 36). I have severe social anxiety/panic attacks and a huge fear of the dentist.

I've lost most of my back teeth and now have to wear a partial on both my lower and upper teeth. I saved the front ones because I couldn't bear the thought of removing a denture and not having any teeth! I mean...at this age it's devastating, as I'm sure you know.

If it helps at all, I will say that my partial denture is not too noticeable...in case you ever have to go that route. But lately I've noticed that where the partial sits is causing some recession on my gums and I'm so worried I'm going to lose the other ones. It's terrifying! Like you...my whole life seems to revolve around my mouth!

If I can find a pic of me smiling (there aren't many lol) I'll attach it so you can see that you really can't tell too much with the partial denture, but there is a small gap where they start. Hopefully you don't have to go that route, but just know you're not alone! Best of luck! Keep us updated on your progress!

Thank you for sharing KittyKitty! Definitely not too noticeable.

It's so hard...I am sitting here trying to figure out if I should go to a 4 months trip with these teeth or just go to the dentist right now to remove them for partial denture...Oh :confused::confused:...

Honestly, I think the best thing you could do right now is go to the dentist and just let them do x-rays and have a look. Usually the first appointment is super easy and not too expensive and they can set up a treatment plan for you. I know it's hard. I usually cry before my appointments (seriously...lol)...but it always sets my mind at ease once I'm done and at least know what the plan is. I've also found that I usually make the situation much worse in my head than it actually is. Once you have a plan in place I think you'll feel much better. :)

Also...since you've been planning this trip I assume that you've been saving for it and maybe you're deciding between using your finances for the trip or using them for the dentist. If this is the case, I'd check into CareCredit. This is how I was able to pay for all of my dental work. They let you pay it off monthly...and even offer no interest for like 12-18 months. I didn't think I'd qualify (student debt ), but I did.

Overview (lol)...1. I'd make an appointment and get a plan in place to ease your mind. 2. Go on your trip and have a blast. 3. Return and start with getting your dental work done.

*Side note...IV Sedation is amazing if you're nervous. Totally worth the extra money if you have it. You can get so much work done at once and you honestly fall asleep, wake up, and it's over! This is coming from someone who freaks out at my own shadow! :(

Good luck!
I think you'll do great! ;)

I'm in a similar boat... despite visiting the dentist regularly, my new dentist* has concluded that my four upper front teeth need removed. Apparently, I have a particularly aggressive case of gum disease (potentially not helped by an auto-immune disease I have, plus being a smoker). :( It's even more frustrating as the teeth themselves are fine. I'm getting them taking out in a couple of weeks and having a partial denture fitted (Valplast). I know at some point I need to have my front lower teeth removed too. The idea is that I'll have a bridge fitted for the upper teeth next year but I'm dreading the whole experience. That said, I'd rather not let them come out on their own, and I had a brutal gum abscess over one of my front teeth recently which was agony, and has left the tooth loose and it has dropped down a couple of mm. The denture looks much better than my current teeth so I might actually smile for the first time in years.

If I were you, I'd go to the dentist and get their opinion. My dentist seems convinced that I'll be happier with my teeth when the partial is fitted, so it might be an improvement on the situation, and also with the anxiety that you're experiencing.

*I'm in the UK, and switched from NHS to private, at the same surgery, after my regular dentist stopped working there
