Ive got a bone fragment that has surfaced loads in the last few days and is making my gum very sore. It was from a tooth that was extracted 3 years ago. My dentist noticed it starting to surface at my recent 2 month checkup and said not to worry it will just eventually fall out.

Can i yank it out myself or should i wait or ask the dentist to get it out for me?

Hi Meliskaaa,
If its sore then I would say go to your dentist and have in removed.
Regards,

Thanks for the reply...

I rang them and theyve made me an appt for in a few weeks time... as their nhs funding as run out and therefore they can't see me till mid april! Unless i want to pay to have it removed! How bad is that?!

So what can i do in the meantime... bonjela? The receptionist didnt seem to know the answer...!

I think you'll find that they are obliged legally to see you if you are in pain. Their funding is not your problem. Part of their contract is to see you if you are having pain/problems. You could phone your Primary Care Trust to clarify this point (I'm not 100% certain).

Hi I have the same problem at the moment and yes I agree it is VERY sore...

However don't try and dig it out yourself..I have tried doing this twice and all I did was, push the bone fragment deeper into my gum....you would have thought I would have learned the first time I did it........

I have been using bonjella, I put a big blob on and leave it to sort of soak in...My dentist did see it but left it and said, it would work it's way out....

So why did I go home and try and get it out... GOD KNOWS but I learned my lesson...it is slowly on the move again and this time I will not touch it :-[

Thank you to you both for your replies...

Will do the bonjela thing and stop playing with it with my tongue as now that is sore too lol!

My piece of bone is back on the surface, so it does gradually come out...

I know what you mean about the tongue thing ... me too I just cant stop licking it BUT WE MUST...my jaws are aching enough at the moment with a bite problems and me keep poking my tongue up into my gum it not helping...

Hope you get sorted soon one way or another....me I am just going to wait...8-)

The only trip to the dentist I want at the moment is the one to the hospital to sort out this bite issue ;)
