bony lump in gum where wisdom tooth had been

So here is whats going on. In August 2005 I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. Now tonite when I was at the movies I noticed what felt like a bony lump in the gum of my upper left side right over the space where the wisdom tooth had been. I was just at the dentist for a root canal on my upper right side a couple weeks ago and the dentist didn't mention that there was anything wrong on that side but I'm still nervous that I have oral cancer or something (I'm kind of a hypochondriac). Would the dentist have noticed it if it was abnormal even if he wasn't working on that side of my mouth? Has anyone else had anything similar to this? Is it something to be worried about or am I just being paranoid? Thanks in advance.

It's probably a bony spicule, a sort of spike of bone that's formed after the extraction. It's nothing to worry about. For future information, oral cancers are almost always soft tissue lesions, in other words they're soft, not hard. They're also pretty rare in non-smokers.

If it's bothering you that much, I'm sure your dentist will be happy to take a quick look at it to reassure you.

Wisdom tooth question, please read.

So here is the situation. Back in August 2995 I had all four wisdom teeth taken out. I haven't had any problems since, but now today I feld a round lump in my guns where my upper left wisdom tooth was, and a piece of bone or tooth where my wisdom tooth used to be. I had my mother take a look at it and she says that it looks like I have another tooth coming through. How is that even possible? Granted I do have an uncle who had six wisdom teeth taken out so I know that it is possible to have more that four wisdom teeth, but if I did have another wisdom tooth waiting to come in wouldn't my regular dentist or the specialist dentist who did the extractions have noticed it? Could it be something else completely like some kind of cancer maybe (I know it probably isn't cancer, but I'm a huge hypochondriac)? Or could it be just a leftover piece of bone? Has anyone else ever had anything similar to this, and is it something to worry about? Thank you for reading and hopefully replying.

Yes, the date was a lovely typing error. Wouldnt it be lovely if it were true though, because that would mean it hasn't happened yet so wouldn't have to worry for another millenium. I've never heard of anyone having so many wisdom teeth, but then there are plenty of things I hadn't heard of tooth and gumwise before joining this site. I would have thought though because the wisdoms were removed there was room for other teeth that hadn't been able to come down before are now appearing. But, it could be something that runs in the family because in my family we don't have wisdom teeth. Perhaps you've got ours! But we don't want then thank you, we've done quite nicely without.

The only way to know what it is would be to go to a dentist and have it checked. Since it's worrying you so much, then the sooner you do it the better by the sound of it. The most likely thing is that it's a bit of bone that was damaged during the extraction working its way out.
