can't put this off anymore!!!

Im back and doing nothing about my teeth has not helped. I have no teeth left with which to chew food as the last surface broke off about a month ago. I got up yesterday morning and I felt the first twinge of a problem. It really is sore and this is labor day week-end. The dentist I have been to about having full mouth extraction and dentures put in (all in one visit) is of course not available until tuesday. He perscribed me antibiotic and tramadol last time but I have no refill on the antibiotic, the pain medication I had filled but never used it. This was about 2 months ago and thank God I have the pain med to get me through until tuesday am when I can call him and get in. This all makes for a miserable holiday but this is it, I am going to have this work done and be done with all this. I am terrified of the whole dental deal but they are supposed to us oral councious sedation. I would like to know, am I making more of this than there really is? He says I will be in and out in about 1 hour, never to have this much dental pain ever again. I am scared and need support. I just have to get through this week-end. Wish I had an antibiotic but my face is not swollen at this point. I don't want to have to go to an emergency dental clinic unless I have to. Please take a look at my posting "Front tooth fell out gum disease help" Just like you this time last week was holiday here in UK, I had exactly same problem, couldn't even CALL a dentist till Tuesday!! I had massive gap in my mouth where the tooth had fell out and I was in agony!!

Please, if you have any Baking powder, bicarb soda, mix with a bit of salt, warm water and swill round your mouth, it will feel lousy for a few minutes, but will temporarily relieve toothache for about an hour (bliss!)

I had not even registered with a dentist as I was terrified,I had to make an emergency appointment with a new dentist on Tuesday after the hols. She was lovely, and comforted me as I cried. I returned yesterday, allegedly JUST to get my new top tooth fitted, when she asked if I would like to get all the treatment done there and then..!!! I was so shocked I just said yes, albeit very quietly !!

My whole appointment lasted 20 minutes, 3 x novacane injections, 1 x extraction, 2 x fillings, deep clean, and a plate fitted with my new tooth!!!! Guess what ? No pain, lovely dentist, fantastic (almost Hollywood) smile, and me ? I was a dental phobic for years and expected the worst, the imagining bit is always the worse!!

"See you in 6 months " was music to my ears and I haven't stopped showing off my lovely smile since, (even though I'm still a bit sore, what the hell!!)

You will be fine, with the support of all of us fellow phobics here, you will feel able to make the call and begin your journey to a lovely smile..

Don't know where you are located, but here in Ga, and many other states, I am sure, we have one minute clinics in many phamracies. Walgreens and CVS in my neighborhood offer this service. They could get you on an antibiotic until you can call the dentist. Went back and read your earlier posts and you are not alone in feeling despair about loosing your teeth.
It is a very emotional situation. Several others here on the forum have just gone through it and lived to tell the story!
It's not fun, but neither is constant pain.
I had all uppers removed 6 years ago,IV sedation, and immediate denture. Now I have to go and see if they can save the lowers. My appointment is Sept.14TH. No I am not happy about this and like you, also feel a real fear of loosing the rest of my teeth. You are not alone here.
Hope you can get relief soon!

Thanks so much for being here! I tried the warm salt water and it seems to help. I am going to see now about the walgreen or cvs clinic. I am in the Atlanta, Ga. area so maybe I can find one.

I found a Walgreens with a Redi-Clinic in Powder Springs, opens at 11am tomorrow so I will get an antibiotic. I spoke with the nurse practioner and explained my dilema and she said it was not a problem for her to prescribe a antibiotic till I can see the dentist. I thought I had a fever but just checked and so far temp ia normal. I will use the tramadol pain med as directed and I should make it through till tues morning. Thanks all for being there, it is a great help knowing I am not alone!

I'm sorry to hear you are in pain but I'm glad that you are able to get started on an antiobitic!  It always seems like these things happen on a holiday or while you are on vacation!  

I get nervous when I have to go for a cleaning and check-up so I can only imagine how you must be feeling.  Luckily, you already noted a big positive to getting this taken care of......no more dental pain!  You will have a beautiful healthy smile and no longer suffer through the pain of toothaches or the fear if a tooth or filling breaks.  I was convinced that I was going to face that route myself so I studied everything I could dental related and one of the web sites had so many happy denture wearers that I began to feel less scared of that as a possibility.  Instead I have an extemely expensive mouth but know that if/when the time comes, I'll be able to handle it.  I'm sure you will be happy with the end result, just keep up the positive attitude!  You can do this and we'll all be here to help you along the way!!!  

I hope the medications help and that you can enjoy the long holiday week-end!

best of luck to ya.I use trammadol for my back.Usually around 3 or4am Seems to work pretty well.Once I get my teeth straightened out then maye i can do something about my 4 bad discs in my back.I consider myself Basically healthy but with alot of little things to take care of.Hang in there! Bob

Hope you are on the way to the clinic now! I have found the nurse practitioners to be quite good. Being a retired nurse myself, I am proud of the work they do.
We are off to Atlanta today to visit the aquarium so will check back later to see how you are!

HI ALL;
Just got back from the clinic at the Walgreen drug store and now I have an antibiotic. I am releved that is over-just hate going but I had to have something to kill this horrable infection. This morning most of the pain was gone but I felt like I had a tennis ball in my right cheek, and it looked like I did. Had a 100.1 fever with chills last night so I think I did the right thing in getting the antibiotic. I am so glad that this board is here and the encouragement and suggestions are so helpful! I need to eat but what, every bit hurts. I have bought some nutrition shakes and that goes down ok. I just want to be on the other side of this thing and don't know if I will really have the courage to follow through, I have tried and failed before. I just have to do it somehow and all your encouragment really helps. Maybe I can nap some so I will go. THANKS for being here!

Glad you got the mediction! have been there with abscess pain and fever. Hope after 24 hours you will feel better; that's how long it usually takes for the antibiotics to kick in.Good luck

Just wanted to say the antibiotic has taken the swelling down and I think the pain thats there now is probably because the swelling is off the nerves. I take a little alive but only a couple a day to control the pain. I know that the next step is to get back in touch with the dentist and monday would be the best time to do that but I am really scared to get this thing rolling. Once I do I am going to be committed and this scares me but I think dying from these bad broken teeth scares me more.

Hope the pain starts subsiding soon now.It should do with the antibiotics I guess. Yes, I know its easy to say, but you really must get yourself sorted out because teeth can cause severe health problems. I was always surprised that after not going to the dentist for a lifetime practically I had not died of septicaemia a long time ago. The dentist even said to me after my teeth were out that she was surprised I hadnt had health problems but I guess all round I have been extremely lucky. So, although it is scary, you can get through it and we will support you every step of the way.
