Ah well the big day is almost on me now, 9:25 tomorrow morning 4 extractions with IV sedation; after reading the numerous positive experiences of people on here with sedation, I don't feel too anxious at the moment, will see how things go the closer I get to the time....

I've had a few beers to ensure I sleep well, but bizarrely I don't want to go to bed just yet, 'cos I know that the next conscious thought will be "Oh s**t, today's the day!"

i hope your sedation surgery goes as well as mine,

i had 3 wisdoms taken out and I can honestly say I would do it again in a heartbeat. The doc asked me a question and i woke up an hour or so later. NO PAIN!

do yourself a BIG favor, Once they wake you up, put ice on and leave it on the rest of the day. intervals of a few minutes on and off of course. as soon as you get home, take your vicodin or what ever painkiller they perscribe and just crash for the day. The next day you will only be a little tender but there really isn't any pain.

Well it's now been around 8 hours since my treatment, and I'm feeling more like normal now.

Sitting around in the waiting room for 3/4 hour was probably the worst part, the anxiety and anticipation were becoming unbearable, just wanted to get it over with. Eventually I was called in and was somewhat surprised to find that I had two dentists and three nurses attending me, felt like some sort of freak at a circus! Inserting the needle for the IV was pretty painless, just felt a minor sting/burning sensation, though nurses were talking to me to try and distract me so it was no big deal. Then dentist started to administer the sedative, again whilst talking to me; initially nothing seemed to happen and I can remember saying to dentist that I was still wide awake, then wham I was out!
I was there to have four teeth extracted, and have no memory whatsoever of the anaesthetic injections, or of having three teeth removed, however I did become aware that they were struggling with one tooth as I can remember thinking to myself that they're having problems here. I must stress that although I was aware of this, there was no pain at all, just a vague awareness that 'something's' happening to me. All the rest of the treatment I have absolutely no recollection.

Afterwards I was led into another room to have a lie down and recuperate, and although groggy and slightly unsteady, was perfectly able to walk unaided and aware of people around me.

Back home I grabbed a couple of hours sleep first, then weighed up how I felt.
The side effects for me consisted of slight, but persistant headache, aching legs (!) and my jaw felt like I'd been beaten up on both left and right sides.
A cup of tea and two ibuprofen took care of most of the pain, though the mild headache persists. Another peculiar thing is that I feel quite depressed, I was expecting to feel elated once it was all over despite the pain, strange.
I can only assume that different people suffer different side effects as I don't recall anyone mentioning these things, however I'm sure that a good nights sleep will cure me.

Overall I'm very pleased with the IV sedation, I shudder to think what it would have felt like without it, the fact that extracting one particular tooth 'woke' me up suggests that it would have been very painful otherwise.

Look at me, I cancelled my root canal for today and now have another 2 weeks to wait and worry, and you did it and got it behind you. You have to feel remarkably relieved. But you should be proud of yourself for doing it, I'm proud of you and I don't even know you.


I just feel so relieved for you having this over with, now you can just come on the boards and help the rest of us to get er done!!

well done again paul i bet once you have a really good sleep you will feel so much better and also be so relieved ive got to have iv i hope to god they don't get mine stuck but then you say you weren't frightened or in pain so thats good its just sounds scary if your trying to imagine what its like if they hadn't got it stuck do you think you would have slept through the whole thing? anyway i hope you feel lots lots better tomorrow

Pleased everything went well for you - as it did for me. I was glad it was over, the IV wiped me out for most of the day. My jaw aches something rotten and have been downing painkillers all day. But I was pleased with my IV and its good to hear you were as well.

Its good to know the worst is over and we both got through it OK.

Thanks Leela, I take it you weren't able to reinstate your appointment, shame, but I totally understand why you cancelled, think we've all been there, the temptation is so great.

Emma, I see you live in Notts too, where are you going for treatment? I went to The Grange in Sherwood, one of the few places that do IV sedation.

Thanks Graham, pain wise I'm doing ok, though I do have large swelling on one side, luckily dentist gave me some antibiotics which should sort it pretty quickly. Overall I'm feeling pretty good now, helped by a few beers!

hi again wow someone else in notts!......just aren't enough places that offer iv sedation its silly really everybody is bothered by the dentist to some degree and if someone said to you you need teeth out would you prefer not to know about it and have iv 99 percent would say yes no matter how macho they think they are !! why are all these iv places private by the way was yours private as well? Mines £60 just for the consultation next week !!

Yes mine was private too, cost me £460 for 4 extractions........
NHS only offer minimal dental care nowadays.
