So, I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but I haven't been to a dentist in a very long time. Well about 2 months ago, I made an appointment at a really good dentists office, known for people with dental phobia. Just getting in that door was a huge deal. I sat in that chair for all of about 30 second, and would would only let him look in my mouth with the mirror.

Now my back molars are terrible, some completely missing and others are just broken chunks. After looking at my teeth he said, best advice get them all pulled; cause you won't be able to handle the work that needs to be done if you don't. I agreed, cause they are basically useless at this point (haven't eaten with sides of my mouth in years.

So so I got a referal to an oral surgeon, and he agreed. I've sedation and one quick visit to remove them all.

Now that I'm 36 hours away, I'm freaking out. I don't want to be "conscious" for this. I want to be asleep, but everyone keeps telling me " you will be, you won't remember a thing!" But I keep getting flashes of being awake, and knowing what happening. Everything I've read says I'll be basically completely out of it, and it'll feel like 5 seconds. Hell my had it for her hip replacement! She slept through the whole thing. So why can't I just trust that I'll be out!

im sure many of you have had in sedation. Am I blowing this whole thing out of proportion?

From what I read of people being sedated to have this type of procedure done, they remember going to sleep and they remember walking out of the dentist's office and that is about it. :)

I haven't had any extractions yet - but down the road I am looking at getting 2 wisdom teeth pulled. My back molars are in semi-bad shape (way worse than my front teeth) so my dentist is fighting hard to get them to survive and I'm under strict orders of brushing and flossing 2-3 times a day.

I'm sure you will do great and the dentist will take care of making sure you're in no pain and not awake for the procedure. Most dentists get that if you do not want to be awake for the procedure, you DO NOT want to be awake :) Nobody wants an upset patient while they're trying to work on your mouth.

GOOD LUCK to you!!

I've had three teeth out via sedation, and it was brilliant. ( well as brilliant as it can be)
I remember the iv going in and the next thing the dentist was telling me it was over. Didn't feel a thing.
good luck! You'll be fine :)

Thanks. I guess it's just the fact that they add the word "conscious". Now that I'm 24 hours away, my entire being is screaming to just cancel and run.

I won't cause the 12 teeth being pulled, really need to leave my face, and I know I'll feel so very much better.

I'm very confident that the only reason for my freak out is; when I first went in to see my OS I was under the mistaken impression it was a GA. When I asked about getting the mask to be put to sleep he said "oh we don't do that" I knew it wasn't GA, but was in to much shock to ask the many follow up questions I had.

Everyone seems eps so very confident that I'll be completely out/won't care. So I guess I just have to accept and believe that I'll be asleep.

What are they giving you? I am having a deep cleaning tomorrow and they are giving me Triazolam and Hydroxyzine. Like you, I am terrified that I won't be sedated enough? I agree, the word conscious in front of sedation makes me worry.

Has anyone had these medications?

Not sure what drugs I'm getting. I'll call before I go in.

Yours sound wonderful though, the first one they give you (halcion) that's gonna knock you completely out, just right to sleep. The second is for the general anxiety, and keeping you very relaxed.

I hope mine is the same.

I don't have any experience with sedation (I'm way too much of control freak for that!), but I just want to stop by to wish you luck. I have an appt tomorrow to have 3 fillings replaced, so we will be virtual appointment buddies :-)

You will be conscious - so if they ask you something you can answer them.

The drugs that they are going to use will keep you awake but you will feel NO pain and you won't remember anything.

It's crazy awesome how those drugs work - I had them as a kid when I broke my right femur. Stuff happened, my Mom swears I was awake and talking to them during a procedure, and I remember NO pain and ZERO memories of what they did.

1 week and 2 days as go, i had 16 teeth pulled under IV sedation. I dont remember anything other than them setting the cannula ip in my arm and feeling really light and woozy then BAM i was out cold....as far as im concerned anyway. My husband said i told a funny and embarrassing story about us just before he was ushered out of the room. I was really worried like you but trust me you'll be absolutely fine. Id do sedation again if i ever needed to, felt a lot better than recovering from a GA.
