Extraction query

Hi all, new to the forum and I need some advice.

I'm terrified of having teeth extracted and I have a tooth that needs to be removed.

My fear stems from a bad experience where my dentist did not believe me when I told her I could feel everything, she told me to stop being silly and continued with the procedure. It was quite possibly one of the most horrific experiences of my life.

Since that time I've had another tooth pulled that was snapped to the gum after being kicked in the mouth, however this was done under IV sedation and the experience was great, so much so that I hugged my dentist once she'd finished - so I've been told anyway as I can't remember anything.

My immediate problem is that my current dentist can't offer sedation at the moment and so they've had to refer me to a community dentist, however this appointment may take 2 months to come through, so I'm considering biting the bullet and going for it without sedation as (a)I can't bear the pain much longer and (b)I can't take anymore time off work.

My questions are:
1. What can I expect?
2. How long will it take?
3. Can anyone spare any experiences, good or bad?

Also, the tooth in question is adjacent to my lower right wisdom tooth. My wisdom tooth has grown at an angle into it and smashed it.

Trust that you will be in control and call the shots is the key thing here. You should be fine so long as you trust your dentist to not 'commit assault' and so long as you trust them to stop in the unlikely event that you needed to indicate that you wanted more local anaesthetic.
The agreement is, if I am not numb, you do not pull my tooth. We will rethink in the unlikely event that there is such a problem, if top ups don't work.
A competent dentist should be able to get you feeling so numb, even you don't doubt it will be painfree.

You will feel only pressure not pain - they are totally different sensations and you will not confuse them as the patient but your original dentist certainly did and should be ashamed of herself.

Apart from wisdom teeth under GA in hospital as an adult. My last extraction awake with local was of a healthy tooth to make room for braces at age 13 or 14. I had an NHS dentist I trusted at the time - (could have opted for 'oldstyle' gas GA if I wanted at a neighbouring practice) - but chose to do it with dentist I knew and just local instead. It was fine, not painful at all...did feel a bit of pressure though.

Hi, I had my first molar removed yesterday and other than the sensation of pushing pulling and twisting i felt nothing.
I broke the tooth at the gum line and the roots had fractured too so it came out in small bits.
This was my first visit in 15 years due to having extractions as a child that wer not nice so i was very scared but it was quick.
I write this now at 9.30 am and i had the extraction at 4.30 yesterday, face is swollen but not on pain killers and as the saying goes 'better out than in' and i do feel better knowing the tooth has gone along with the pain.
I was offered sedation but it would be a few weeks or injections and it can be done now, so i decided Now. 15 mins later including numbing up etc i was done.

Pushing, pulling and twisting?! The sound of that just freaks me out. Can you compare it with anything? Thanks.

Focus on the fact that they 'wiggle' the tooth out and it seems much better!
They have to loosen it from the socket basically and this is not done by pulling but by wiggling and elevating.
The sensations are still painfree, it's just that you are aware that something is going on.

Only thing i think comes close is like when you have chewing gum stuck on a tooth and you prize it off. Again no pain just a sensation.
Please bear in mind that my tooth was basically roots as the rest had broken off at gum line and it had rotted down too but is was very quick, pain free and it is 8.20am here in sunny yorkshire....and i had my extraction wednesday at 4.00 and i am swollen but not on any pain killers and glad that it is out.
It is very quick, Take an Ipod and play some music, close your eyes and it will be sorted.
