I feel your pain on that one!! LOL

I remember a time when my mother came to get me after school (no idea why as we always had to either walk or ride our bikes) and she'd just gotten done at the dentist having a filling.

I was all full of chatter because I'd received an assignment that day to do a report on the Pueblo Indians. My mother kept saying "Pleblo" and I kept (increasingly irritated) correcting her. Finally she exasperatedly explained to me that half of her face was numb from the novocaine and that she was trying to say it correctly, but couldn't.

Instead of finding myself a vastly amusing comedienne, I felt bad about the whole thing. :shame:

I would have had her saying alsorts, I am a torment too, and I have a warped sense of humour, or so I am told, I find the oddest things funny, and I can usually see the funny side to things.:p

When my mom got her dentures she kept saying it was WAINING instead of RAINING! Lol

First molar extraction and petrified!

I have another post here somewhere but need more support. Having #31 molar extracted Wednesday and getting more scared by the day. My dentist is sending me to an oral surgeon because my tooth is close to a nerve and she doesnt want to take any chances. I've only had 2 fillings so far and that's it--but did well with the fillings. When I asked my dentist how long it'll take to get the tooth out, she said pssssh 5 seconds? So I'm guessing it's not a big deal then and she is just being safe.

Anyway, I have Xanax but I think .05 mg of that won't touch my anxiety when it'll count. And I am apprehensive of Niterous gas.

i am not afraid of the needles, just the actual procedure. Right now I am shaking and feel like I could vomit and the procedure is Thurs. PLEASE HELP! :(

Hello Pafons, I had a tooth extracted last tuesday, actually getting the tooth out took id say less than 1 minute, it was wiggle wiggle wiggle done.

Trust me, what you are putting yourself through being nervous is a million times worse than the actual extraction itself, I know its very easy to say "don't worry" but it will be over before you know it :)

Re: First molar extraction and petrified!

Hi Patti I answered your other thread, you will be fine, it will be over before you know it. It is good that your dentist is sending you to an oral surgeon that will have done this many, many times, it will be a breeze for him. As I said before getting a tooth out is the easiest and quickest procedure usually, compared to filings etc... It will be so quick you will miss it, when you read on here and in my own experience its done and you don't even realise it. If you are afraid of the gas ask them to do it with just being numbed, I would have thought that would be possible. I personally hate the thought of not being fully aware, so if this is how you feel, I wouldn't think there is any reason to give you the gas if you don't want it. You could always contact the surgeon or his office and ask. He would be the best person to have a word with you, you could ask if he could ring you at his convenience if you explain to his staff, what the problem is. You could ring or e mail.

Good luck for Thursday, you will be fine. :grouphug:

Re: First molar extraction and petrified!

Good luck Patti! Find comfort in knowing that you are going to specialist. Oral surgeons do nothing but remove teeth all day long so the procedure should be easier for you than it would be with your regular dentist. Remember that once you are numb, it should not be painful at all. There will just be a lot of pressure and maybe some unusual sounds. The way I see it, it never hurts to TRY the procedure. IF you're too anxious to carry out the procedure once you've attempted it, just reschedule with maybe heavier sedation (either oral or IV) doesn't have to be nitrous gas. You may be pleasantly surprised and cope a whole lot better than you are anticipating...and the procedure may turn out to be easier than you think but you just have to be willing to take a chance on things (easier said than done, I realize). If you coped well with fillings, I have no reason to believe that you won't cope well with the extraction, just make sure you are numb and everything will be fine! Please try to keep yourself occupied so you don't talk yourself into cancelling and keep us all posted!

When I had my fillings I told them I wasn't numb enough and they all laughed because my face was all droopy. And they were right. It was enough and I never felt a thing. How will I know if I'm numb enough?

Outside of trial and error (which is the least preferred method) my dentist told me that one way to tell that you are properly numb for bottom teeth is that you will feel the numbness stop directly in the center of your bottom lip on the side being numbed. I don't think top teeth work in quite the same way but either way your face should feel kind of "fat" and they should give you enough time to allow the local to work ...usually like 5-10 minutes. Unless you are "wired" differently or have an infection the local should work as it is intended to. If you are concerned about not being numb during a procedure, one thing that works for me is arranging a stop signal in advance with my dentist so if for some reason I seem numb and then halfway through the procedure, I'm starting to feel discomfort I can just raise my hand and interrupt the work immediately. It gives me a better sense of control over the situation and I have had to use the signal on a few occasions so it's definitely worth having handy.

I am glad you have written this, because no matter how many times I have been numb, when asked if I feel numb, I always say I think so, but I'm never sure, so they usually say well lets make a start and if you feel the silghtest thing we'll stop and give you a bit more.

I don't know the correct terms for the teeth but if it is a bottom one, your jaw and lip will feel numb, possibly your tounge at that side as well. They usually test the area for you as well, to see if you are numb enough. When you had the filings you were numb, it will be the same but more numb for the extraction.

You will be fine, good luck, all will go well.:)

Well, I tend to do a bit of biting down onto the tooth that is going to be worked on....and if I feel nothing, no sensation of that tooth, kind of an empty feeling as if the tooth isn't there and the whole area feels huge, then I know it has worked. Numbing is a really hard thing to describe, but the bottom line is that you will have some warning if the LA has not taken affect. Then dentist may press around the gum line and start preparing your tooth and that will be the point at whic you will be aware if there is any sensation, ages before it gets to the extraction part.

I know this thread is VERY old, but it has helped me immensely!!!!

I am having a tooth removed on Wednesday, and I am usually cool as a cucumber when it comes to the dentist. The sound of a drill can actually put me to sleep. BUT I am going insane panic mode when it comes to thinking about my upcoming molar removal.

You guys have helped me out so much! I am getting anticipatory anxiety about the whole sounds and pain and shot reaction and blah b;ha that google is telling me. When I was 18, I had all four wisdom teeth, two impacted, one had roots that were curled around a nerve, and I was in no worry mode the whole time. In and out. I even went clubbing that night. Here I am 41, and have a root canal with a crown that is failing that they cannot save the tooth, should be a super easy extraction and I am freaking out, LOL.

These choice words of wisdom have helped me a lot though. Thank you guys!!:)
