Need a molar extracted.I am scared to make appointment!!!! Please help

I broke my back molar in front of my wisdom tooth on left side Feb 2013. It broke a little more this Jan 2014. I need to schedule an appointment to have a consultation to have it extracted and find out how much it will cost. I am terrified to do so, i know once I get there I will be fine its just the wait that gets me most. Please help me, main things I am worried about it, extraction itself and how long it will take. I want to take an ipod and listen to music so i dont hear everything going on, is that possible? How long does it take an oral surgeon to pull a back molar normally? The inside of the tooth is missing, has full outside and little bit on bottom but most has fallen out.

It doesn't usually take long at all, it can take longer waiting for you to get numb. If you had a word with the dentist when you get one you could ask about taking your ipod, I read on here that most dentists don't mind as long as you can still hear what is being said to you.

Good luck I hope you can manage to make an appointment soon. It is much better dealt with sooner rather than later. Once it is dealt with you won't have the constant worry that you have now.

Are you in the UK ?

If you go private the charges will vary and you could ask the dentist what they charge. A lot have webpages that you can have a look on, if not you could ring and ask before you go.

No I am in the USA and have no dental insurance so going to use the discount program available at their office. I know the wait is normally the worst from what I have heard. I just cant seem to get that into my head.

I think you may find that once you have contacted the dentist and made that first move, which is a very hard thing to do, you will feel a bit better. That bit of pressure is off your head.

Once you tackle the first appointment things become a lot easier after that, I know it is hard to believe but it really does boost your confidence about going the second time, the more you go and get used to it the better you feel.

Well I broke down and called but the appointment for consult isnt until June 30 @ 8 am EST. Until then I will be a nervous wreck. I will just be so glad when its all over and done with

Was going through the same thing last week, i know how you feel and it is a horrible feeling. I had a bottom molar extracted this morning and it was super quick, took around 30 seconds. As carol said most of the time is spent waiting for the injections to kick in.

I had that same location molar pulled a month ago.. the worst part is the anticipation. Once you get there they numb you up realllllly well.. if you dont feel totally numb ask for more. so then they pull it.. it takes like 5 minutes and its out.. you feel pressure but not painful at all..easy peasy.

Follow the after care instructions really well. I didnt even need meds after.. once I was done biting on the gauze the pain was gone and i felt fine.

I had to eat carefully and rince after each meal for a few days and then I was good to eat on both sides in about a week.

The space is not a problem at all.. i dont even notice its gone.

I have had 3 wisdom and 1 molar pulled.. they were all the same process

Give yourself a big pat on the back, I think you have done really well making this appointment
Good for you try not to stress yourself out totally. The waiting really is the worst thing. You could ring and ask that if they get any cancellations if you could take them. You could also ring every few days and see if they have any earlier appointments.

The first appointment usually nothing happens except for them having a look and charting your teeth, maybe they will take an x ray if you feel you can cope with it. They can have a look with just the mirror. They will discuss with you the treatment they advise you to have and also the best way for you to be able to handle it. They can start with the small stuff if you prefer and as the trust is built move onto the bigger things.

Always remember 'you are in charge' and you have to give informed consent for any and all treatment and this includes them looking in your mouth. They will ask you if that is okay and you agree to it. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how good and helpful they are.

Hey, just saw this and wanted to reply, I've been reading everyones posts for weeks, as I had a crumbled back molar which because of fear I left for so long, anyways about a month and a half ago I started getting sharp awful pains in it, it was so much agony I felt I was going to pass out, but I kept ignoring it, anyways finally my bf managed to get me to go for a check up, I prayed that it would only be a filling but alas the decay was to deep and I needed extraction, well I was distraught.

My extraction was today and I was petrified, shaking and crying on the way in, but I'm glad I went once the nice dentist calmed me down she numbed me, and I couldn't feel a thing, my tooth took a bit longer than usual because of all the decay and damage, about 30mins for me, but some peoples are done in minutes, but it was nothing like how I built it up in my head, a bit of pulling which is weird but not painful, and poking around in your mouth, but once it's out it's done, and I am so relieved to be free of my toothache, my gum is kind of dull achey but it's fine after some pain meds.

I am sure your dentist would be fine if you needed some music to keep you calm

So please don't worry yourself too much, I suffer from anxiety disorder and have huge dental phobia and I did it, when I really thought I could not.
