My pulse is steadily increasing, I'm trembling, I'm queasy. Wish me luck

Hi, how did you get on? Not has bad as you anticipated i hope.

Well I'm back from my appointment and it went better than expected. The dentist and hygienist were very friendly and understanding of my concerns and my anxiety. I did a panorex 360 xray and bitewing xrays. I didn't get to have a cleaning today because I have gum disease with heavy tartar buildup. They gave me a treatment plan to come back for a deep cleaning, laser treatment as part of the cleaning, and I have some cavities that will need to be filled. I was very worried about bone loss and I had surprisingly little. I will be going back next week to set up my appointments. I have opted for non iv sedation. I'm feeling a lot better after making it through the first appointment. I feel like I will be able to tackle my future appointments now. Thank goodness for this forum and all of the supportive people here. I have not been a very active poster but I do read many of the other posts here. So again, thank you all for being so supportive!

Glad to hear it went well and that your dentist and hygienist were nice! :)

Congrats and well done!:jump::jump::jump:
So happy to hear that it went well and even better than expected! These are lovely news! I'm also happy to hear that you feel confident enough to get through your treatment without iv sedation. On this way every visit will be a positive experience and your anxiety gets less and less with every visit and allows you to stay on track long term. It's also nice to hear that you found the forum being a support on your journey.
Well done again and keep us posted whenever you feel like it. :)

Well, I'm back from a pre sedation appointment where I had to prepay for my upcoming visit in May for my deep cleaning. My initial brief wave of confidence is once again crushed after finding out the extent of work I need done after the cleaning, which will end up maxing out our insurance and cost three times more than anticipated. I need 20+ fillings, a build up with pins (don't even know what that means) and a crown. I cried through today's visit, feeling guilty about the expense to my husband and feeling ashamed of myself. I was half tempted to walk out in the middle of the visit but I did schedule the deep cleaning. I was really hopeful that this was all going to be over with soon but now I have a whole month and a half to dread just the deep cleaning. Feeling defeated today.

Hey, I'm sorry to hear about how you feel now, there might be quite a lot of heavy information and emotions to process now and I guess this needs time. Dental fear is a journey and it's never smooth, but don't let the obstacles along the way take away your confidence.

I totally get your feelings of shame and regret, BUT you are doing amazing (even if it doesn't feel like that right now). You have accomplished a lot of things in terms of self-care recently and you have managed to get through two dental appointments. It's so easy to concentrate on the things that didn't go well, but do not forget to celebrate the small victories along the way. Progress is not linear, there will be good days and not so good days, but when you look back in some time, you will see that you are doing better overall.

From your previous posts your husband seemed to be very supportive. Was there any particular comment from him that makes you feel guilty about the expenses?

Well done for scheduling the deep cleaning and winning over the urge to leave in the middle of an appointment. Take care and please be kind to yourself, it's ok to feel down sometimes.

So sorry to hear that you had such a rough day :(. Do you think it might be worth getting a second opinion, considering the amount of work (and money) proposed? I know you went to great lengths to find a place with good reviews, and that your husband also checked them out, but there might be other dentists in your area who also get good reviews so you have a point of comparison. I also thought that 6 weeks seems a long time to have to wait for a deep cleaning.

Take good care of yourself :grouphug:

I think the reason for the long wait is because of the sedation. Even though the procedure itself is only about an hour, they set aside 3 hours for the appointment. They seem to be a very busy practice, and the dentist is apparently award winning. I thought about getting a second opinion, but with already on track to max out our insurance I don't think it will be an option. I don't feel as if they are trying to force me into anything. My husband hasn't said anything about the cost, it's just my own guilt that is taking over. Thanks for the support once again. I always feel like I'm on a roller coaster of emotions.
