Hey, guys! I know it's been awhile since I came on here, but I got (part) of the root canal done today. All I can say is...I want more of that laughing gas! That was an awesome feeling. I just wanted to say everything I was thinking. The dentist was very sweet. She put in a temporary filling and is going to finish it up at a later time. I keep forgetting the reason but I'll ask my mom later (I was still a bit out of it when the dentist was explaining it to me). My gum where I got the novacaine is a bit sore right now but as long as I'm getting this tooth fixed, I really don't mind.

Now I have a cleaning on Thursday and I SO asked for the laughing gas :D This site has really helped me and I wasn't half as nervous as I thought I was going to be.

Also, I'm just making sure it's normal to feel a throbbing where the novacaine was injected and does anyone know how long it will last? (I guess I was naive to think I would pain free now as she had taken out the root...)

Congratulations [smiley=jumping.gif]!! And thanks so much for posting about your experience with root canal treatment here, I'm sure it will ease other people's worries.

Some after pain can be normal (I think it's come up in the dentistry questions section a few times, and from memory it might take a week to wear off, but might not last that long). Unless the pain is severe and increasing, it's just a matter of waiting it out. If it's mild pain but annoying, over-the-counter painkillers will help 8-)

I'm glad you found the gas to your liking. I find it really helpful for my appointments. It gives me a high sort-of like smoking weed ( I stopped four months ago) and also makes me sleepy at the same time its weird.[smiley=evil.gif][smiley=cloud9.gif]

But grats on making the appointment and going through with it I realize how hard that is.[smiley=jumping.gif][smiley=cheers.gif][smiley=jumping.gif]

Thanks guys!

Anyone reading this that needs a root canal...let me tell you...the name is worse than the actual treatment! The only thing that I could even say was 'painful' was the needle which was just a pinching feeling for about ten seconds. (Ha ha! It felt like I had a baseball in my mouth...it was so weird)

I really can't thank you guys enough for all the support :grouphug:

Oh yeah, and the pain is basically gone. I think the nerves were just having a 'wtf?' moment.

A bit scared

Ok, so as you guys (might) know. I had a root canal done on Tuesday. That went on just fine. I had laughing gas and novicane. In less than 15 minutes I'm going for my first cleaning in about 10 years and I'm scared out of my mind! I don't even know why...I shouldn't be...but I am. I'm going to have laughing gas, but I guess I'm just scared it's going to hurt [smiley=ashamed.gif]

Re: A bit scared

Hmmm....I think you should already be done so congrats![smiley=jumping.gif]

Re: A bit scared

I'm a little late for this but I'll send positive thoughts your way! If your cleaning was anything like mine you are going to think "why was I scared?" after it's all over!!!!

I'm sure you are going to have a pleasant experience and hope you will come back and share it with us.

Re: A bit scared

::blinks:: I'm actually asking myself 'why was I scared'....guys...IT WENT AMAZING! I can't stop feeling my CLEAN teeth. I can't even control my excitement right now! The hygenist was such a sweetheart. She took full mouth X-rays and said (and I quote) "There's no rush, we're going to take our time." After she said that I was so completely relaxed (but I still asked for the laughing gas). The only time I felt some pain was when she found two cavities (believe me, you can tell when they find them!). A new year and a new smile. That's totally my saying now [smiley=jumping.gif]

Re: A bit scared

I'd have to agree about " you can tell when they find them" its like when they poke with the ermmm....(forgot name) it sticks in your tooth and sometimes hurts a little bit. Well it does for me.

Re: A bit scared

Oh...it definitely did for me. I about lifted my entire lower half of my body off the seat and managed an 'ehn' sound. But that was basically the only time I felt pain. I'm so relieved that, that part is over. It's been such a long time since my teeth have been this healthy looking.

Re: A bit scared

After the root canal the fillings should be a breeze:grouphug:

Re: A bit scared

Seriously I barely felt ANYTHING for the first part of the root canal. Twice (a few hours later) I felt a painful shooting pain through my gum...but I think it was just the nerves and gums as they must have been sore from the shot. Yesterday I felt no pain (which was such a relief because that's all I've felt for the past month). The tooth where I got the root canal started is a tiny bit sore right now...but she was cleaning it so obviously it's going to be a bit sore.

I can remember how gob-smacked I felt after my first cleaning (I'd never had one before in my entire life... and I couldn't believe the difference, my jaw literally dropped, lol) - just the way you described [smiley=jumping.gif][smiley=jumping.gif][smiley=jumping.gif]

Congratulations [smiley=cheers.gif]!!!
