Ive a very rotten wisdom tooth (bottom right) Can I have it out under local anesthetic ?
I first noticed it 3 years ago and now there isn't much left that's visible above the gum line - But its hurting now more than it did. An Ache.
I can't bear the thought of general anesthetic however - Can I have it out under local?

Asbolutely, yes you can.

Great - thanks, thats such a relief. It isnt compacted. Just rotted away, but a lot of its gone now..and I have a terrible phobia of general anesthetic, not the dentist particularly.
Out of interest, how do you know with such certainty?

Because all GA carries a slight risk, it's better to avoid it where possible and since you already quite clearly don't want it, then it's a no-brainer. Most of the time we have to try to convince people that GA actually isn't the only answer for having dental treatment done :)

Because I had all four of mine out with just local numbing. One was impacted and had to be cut out.

The other three were extracted in September and October of this past year. They were out in literally two minute each at most.

As I have said before, if it were possible, I would rather have all extraction and no fillings. Not really would I want to lose my teeth, but the extractions are so much easier and done so much quicker.

And this is coming from a guy who had sleepless nights before the extractions.

Hi Headhunter13,

I have literally just got back in now from having two wizzies extracted with just a local anasthetic.. and well!.

it took me 10 years to get that far, I have been plagued by rotten teeth most of my life due to medications etc, when I was younger, but was just tooo scared to get treatment, I went to dentists they looked in my mouth and as soon as they mentioned the word extraction, I was off lol.. never to return, it went on like this for years, until I finally decided I was ready.

Well, then I went reading on all the forums, and found a million horror stories etc, and almost ended up back at square one, but take what you read on the net with a pinch of salt, I think people love to tend to dramatise things, ie, my experience was worse than yours etc, because it makes better news. And I've spoken to a lot of dentists and none of them have ever had to kneel on someones chest etc, and all that, sounds like a croc to me, I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but if it did it's not a dentist I would go to anyway.

Soo

I spent all last week and last night, fretting, not sleeping, restless, worryikng etc, etc.. diet was all over the place, and almost having panic attacks at the thought of todays procecudure, not to mention many hours spent on the toilet (I won't go into detail there). but I went in, sat down..and two things happened.

1) I didn't even know he had given me the local
2) I didn't even know he had taken the teeth out

the dentist said to me, "I'm just going to poke around a bit" really he kind of tricked me but it worked, because then he said..."that's it!" basically i got all worked up for nowt.

it took about 6 mins to take them out, and it was over.. I was shocked! in a good way, I couldn't believe it.. I even said "are you sure?" lol. I took my ipod with me, and never even got chance to use it, it was over that quick. I know it's maybe not the same for everyone. but my thought here is, that..

the thought itself, and the fear of the unkown is always way worse than the experience, and often dramatically exaggerated too.

so, now I can't believe I waited all those years, and suffered huge losses of confidence for that..but that's what dental fear does.

Anyway, long story short..and agreeing with everyone elses Post

YES!.. go for it, under a local is no prob, peice of cake.. at least that was my experience today.

I had mine done at the hospital by an oral surgeon, my dentist recomended it because of my dental fears, and I think a key thing here is findinga dentist you feel comftable with, you will know when you do..
