Scared of needing apicoectomy! Had recent re treat.

I understand your pain. I am so sorry you are going through this. I am too still waiting on answers and my tooth continues to hurt and the gums around it. Both my oral surgeon and endo have thrown out the works neuralgia and atypical ondontaglia to me which makes me scared to just pull it. Not sure if they hAve mentioned that to you? This is so confusing and hopeless it feels, I am right there with you.

If it helps, neuralgia was mentioned to me as well, because they couldn't find anything wrong in x rays. The oral surgeon said it was definitely not neuralgia. He said neuralgia would be triggered by a touch or something brushing against your face, even wind. It wouldn't be a constant pain. Atypical neuralgia would not be in one place, but moves around. That is what I was told.

Yes thanks. Yeah my oral surgeon said neuralgia and then my endo mentioned atypical ondontaglia. Which basically is a form of neuralgia but it is “explained tooth pain.” It says that having more procedures can make that worse so now i am freaking out to do anything else in thinking this would make things worse. I guess I don’t understand how they can’t see anything on an x Ray yet something can be wrong. My endo doesn’t want to do an apico unless I explore the atypical ondontaglia which I would I suppose see a pain specialist? I don’t know. It’s messed up.

They may want to try nerve meds and see if it helps. If it doesn't, it wouldn't be neuralgia.

Yeah they may want to. How long was your journey on the front tooth? I’m 9 months in and just drains.

Yes - I am in the same boat - exact same thing (re the discussion of neuralgia and atypical...), but I am really starting to trust myself on this. And honestly, they dont know and my symptoms are totally in line with those diagnoses.
I did go to a facial pain specialist and he brought my attention to the three issues - which I think can all be dealt with, but I am convinced that the tooth is separate from the other two.
I personally sense that the tooth is not well and I am kind of done with the guessing as to what it is outside of - the tooth nerve is failing.
So....I go back this Wed and I am going to come out with a plan - I am determined.
I am just hoping that I have the support of my dental people.

I so, so appreciate your response and Mountain Mamas - this forum has been a life saver for me and really helped me center my thoughts on how to deal with this.
I wish you the best as well - please keep us informed as to how you are.

I was just started on Flexiril, which I think is what Mountain Mama was referring to.

I agree! This site has been very helped and thank ful for your and mountain mama’s response! I have never experienced something like this to where it can really rock your world so sometimes just banning together helps make it so you aren’t alone. I hope you come out with some good news on Wednesday and a plan. I think what is hard is not knowing a plan. It’s get something done...wait in pain...get it done...wait in pain. I have two more weeks until my next appt so it’s a waiting in pain time right now. Keep us posted for sure.

So you don’t think what you have is the atypical neuralgia?

Yes - and I dont have either of those, which is why I am kind of getting at my wits end :/

Yes - so true - I have been doing pain and appointment count downs since May 15. It is a vicious cycle and so hard to deal with when it hurts when you talk or swallow or eat, etc. etc. and it is daily.

No, I really dont - like MM said, it doesnt trigger based on touch - in or out of my mouth AND it doesnt move around.
Sadly - I think it is just a very slow healing extraction site + me clenching my jaw out of stress + bad timing for my back back neighbor molar, which has been a problem for me my whole life. This is what I am going into my appointment with - help me heal, night guard to deal with clenching plus de stress stuff and pull tooth. I think that is my treatment plan at this point.

Yup...totally understand!!’ I’m getting to wits end as well. About to have it pulled if I can’t get answers soon. Let us know how the appt goes!

Mine was almost a full year. I had the root canal done in October last year, and just had it extracted a few weeks ago.

I was just started on Flexiril, which I think is what Mountain Mama was referring to.

Flexeril is a muscle relaxant, so that was probably more for the TMJ.

Oh thank you - you are correct :)

I hope it didn't come across as rude. I have taken flexeril before, for muscle spasms. They debated putting me on neurontin for neuralgia
