Hello

I’m aware there’s articles and stuff but I get overwhelmed with information and don’t take much in .

I’m so scared I need a tooth taken out , my daughter had a look at a dentist and they offer iv sedation . Can I ask what qualifications a dentist needs to give this ? Will it be done in the dentist or a hospital?

I really can’t cope at the moment and I don’t have an appointment until October till I’m seen at the community dentist .
I just feel so lost and scared and actually angry that the tooth was attempted with a root canal when I had no problems prior but hay I can’t complain as it’s NHs and I should be grateful that I even got a place in the community dentist .

So fed up

All dentists are theoretically qualified to give IV sedation, in practice they will all have done some postgraduate training.

It can be done almost anywhere, the dental practice, or the community clinic or if necessary in hospital.

@Gordon thanks .

Also what are the risks of sedation if any ? I know it’s safer than a GA but obviously there must be some risks ?

I just need to know as much as I can before I decide on it

Thanks

@Natzuk.. dentist trains before qualification to do various sorts of anaesthetics and may well have done another extra course on sedation run by SAAD. GAs can only be done in hospital. good if the practice agrees to see you without committing to an examination unless you feel ok about it. asking that question reveals if the practice is used to seeing really nervous patients. regards Ian Robertson (retired dentist who treated 1000's of nervous patients)

@robertsonic thanks
I did have a GA too have two teeth out and two detained roots but I know they won’t give me another for this one tooth .
I know I won’t be able to do it with local alone so I will be asked to do it with sedation and am just scared about the side affects . I have a very bad fear . I shake after a GA for a while my teeth chatter and it feels horrible so am worried I’ll have some sort of side affect from the sedation 😢

By one of those weird statistical anomalies, treatment with sedation and local is very slightly safer than with just local... it's such a small amount that it's not really relevant.

IV sedation is phenomenally safe, RA (AKA Inhalation Sedation) is about as safe as you can get.

@Gordon thanks

Also the tooth that definitely needs to come out will I be okay until my appointment then treatment plan ( they can only fit me in in October under the special care dental team )
I’m not in any major pain at all just tender , . Thanks

Sadly I can't predict the future :-) Probably be fine though
