Hi all, im new here & in agony :(
Been in pain now for over a week with my top right molar
i have a white filling in it and went to my dentist he took out the old filling and replaced it, the pain is exactly the same!
i havent slept tidy for days, so went back to dentist last friday and he gave me antibiotics which i gave till today to kick in, they havent worked so went back to my dentist earlier and he was going to try giving me a filling in another tooth just incase, he gave me the injection to numb and even thou i was numb i was still in pain, he said it couldnt be that area cos that would have stopped the pain and it hadnt, so hes decided its not dental pain at all and could be something to do with my jaw, and asked if i was grinding my teeth at night i said i do now and again (as far as i know) and then basically just said hes put me forward for a specialist and he cant help me know more! im in agony with it, and to add to it 2 weeks ago i had 2 teeth removed (upper left molars) i was in pain and they couldnt work out why turned out it was a abscess on the bottom left small tooth, so i lost 2 good teeth cos of this and even tho the abscess is gone im still waiting to have root canal at the specialists, im sick of the pain, i just dont understand why they say its not dental pain? any help/info is great
Thanks...

Anyone?? lol

Hi

It is very hard to say without xrays and other data. I am sure you do not want to hear that. However, if you grind and clench (bruxism) this can cause problems with the tmj (jaw joint.)

This can cause headaches, neck aches, severe tooth pain and face pain. Does your jaw click or pop when moving?

Diagnosis is done with panoramic xray and some other tests. Treatment is custom fitting a removable orthotic that you wear. This is a plastic piece like a mouth guard to take pressure off the joint.

This is one possibility. A full workup is needed to determine the exact cause of the pain.

I hope you can get a speedy diagnosis and recovery.

hi bex
really feel for you as i been having probs with toothache and tooth abcess that has resulted in some facial pain! I see you are in wales?? where abouts???
maybe you could be asked to be reffered to dental hospital in cardiff if you are having no joy with dentist or drs?? i'm not sure who would reffer you thou. I saw an excellent oral surgeon there who determined my tooth was abcessed and dead after dentist failed to do so. the oral surgeon i saw is a dentist as well as specialising in facial pain/wisdom teeth/tmj disorders etc i'm not sure if we're allowed to give names thou??
hope u get some help soon

Sarahlou if you are saying positive things about them, you can absolutely name them or just send a 'pm' if you prefer.

oh ta for that brit..the oral surgeons name is Andrew Cronin. He's a maxiofacial surgeon but used to be a dentist so is very knowledgeable. He is so nice and really explains things well to you. I would def recommend him. He works for the nhs at the dental hospital in cardiff so maybe you could get referred to him by your dentist but there is prob a waiting list. i think he does private work as well thou and works at spire (used to be bupa) cardiff.

Hi all, thanks for the replys
stress doc - my jaw does click sometimes and i do grind my teeth they have offered to make me a guard, so maybe thats is the case, cant handle anymore pain..thanks
saralou- im in cardiff actually lol and im on a waiting list to see someone in the hospital, ive been to a different dentist today for a 2nd opinion and im going back later to have some work done, he done a few test and xrays and says there could be a case of a filling or tmj, im hoping to have a filling today and then its over, TOOTHACHE i think is the worse pain you can ever have lol,

Hi Bex

tmj can be just as painful as toothache sometimes sorer because it feels as if your whole jaw is aching.

if your dentist can help great but also i went to my doctor who gave me anti-imflammatories - kills the pain for me somewhat!!!!

even taking painkillers sometimes kills the pain for me

Continue to see your dentist to see if he can help but tmj is very common
I think there are quite a few posts on this website about it and it can make you see you are not alone¬!!!!:grouphug:

Thank you, been to docs he thinks it could be sinuses? got antibiotics and more painkillers, no difference yet tho, arghhh

bexs - i feel your pain, honestly I know just how painful sinus pain can be!!!!!

it will take a couple of day to ease but if it does'nt go back to your docto and tell him how painful it is!!!!

to me sinus pain causes a bad headache and feel like the whole of the side of my face is in agony, and it feel as if the bit directly under my eye is swollen but when i look is isnt

The doctor game me a nasal spray as well because when my nasal tubes are blocked it helps - but these are to be used sparingly.

I also find a hot water bottle helps as it seem to lessen the pain

drives me crazy as this combined with my tmj makes my face feel as it it is acutely swollen - but it is not *(if you know what I mean)

at least you are trying different things and you may find it has nowt to do with your teeth after all and the antibitics hopefully will kill the pain

good luck and keep us informed
