I'm in ayrshire.
I also get free dental treatment for same reason as you. Sounds like you may have been referred to community dentist. Thats who dealt with me for the IV sedation and you will still get it regardless of circumstances. I may be wrong, but a friend of mine who started her treatment( 7 years ago) and fell pregnant in the middle of it, is still being treated as she says they have to finish the treatment when its started, maybe thats why you are still getting the treatment.

tooth extraction on Wednesday, starting to panic!

Hi,
I posted here before about my fear of the dentist and that i have to get a tooth extracted and that my dentist recommended that i see my GP for some diazepam to help keep me calm. Its only a few days away and now i'm starting to get really scared and i know i'll be worried over the weekend. I've had a really awful week this week as my 1 year old son had to be taken to hospital on Tuesday by ambulance as he'd become very dehydrated due to a stomach bug. He was put on a drip and then had to have a tube in his nose to his stomach to rehydrate him. It has been an awful few days. To make matters worse i also have a huge fear of being sick and have been getting myself really worked up about it. So anyway we got back home today and the first thing i did when i got in was try to cancel my appointment for next week, i just feel that i've been so on edge about this vomiting thing that i did'nt want to be worrying about the appointment.

The only thing is they could'nt give me another appoinment until june and i'm going on holiday then so it looks like i have to go on Wednesday. I really was hoping for a last minute reprieve. Just hoping for some words of encouragement.

Sorry to hear abot your son.I hate when those things happen to my kids.You can do this extraction,just tell your dentist your fears....at any time if your not comfortable you stop.I am so afraid of the dentist and everything about his o0ffice.LOL.Yeesterday I had 8 teeh(MOlars)On the top extracted...and the procedure went pretty well.So you can get through this.I will say a prayer for you and I will be thinking of you.You can do this.

I read your post about your extractions, i'm amazed that you had so many done at once. Did you not feel any pain during the procedure? How are you feeling today?

My dentist is really lovely and he understands how i feel thats why he suggested that i should take diazepam. He's also referring me for IV sedation for two fillings. I'm just so nervous and really want it all to be over with. If you can go through 8 extractions then i can cope with this, trying to convince myself!!

Actually I really diden't feel pain...just pressure of trying to get the teeth out.A couple diden't want to come out he had to work extra hard.Those are the only ones that hurt today.You can do this.The support here is amazing.I will be sending prayers your way.

So sorry to hear about your little boy and thank goodness all is well and he's back home where he belongs. Now's the time to concentrate on you. I am pleased that you weren't able to make another appointment until June, because then you would have had longer to dwell on it and be letting your imagination run riot. Now at least, it will be here soon and then gone and forgotten. Or at least not forgotten, because you will be so proud of yourself, how well you got through it, how well the whole appointment went that it will be on your mind because you will be so proud of yourself, posting here about your success and telling friends and family. So, harder done than said, I know, but try not to panic too much and try to focus on the after, not the before. You will get through it, you know how others have got through their appointments, so you know it can and will be done. All the best, loads of us here thinking of you.

sorry to hear about your troubles, just think, this time next week it will all be over! I am due to have at least one maybe two teeth extracted at some point so I will be looking forward to hearing how everything goes. Good luck!

Extractions aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. Most of the time they are completely painless and over quickly and your on your way home.

thanks for all your replies, it really does help to calm my fears a little to hear of other positive stories. I am trying not to get too worked up about wednesday but its not easy, especially with all the stresses over my little boy. He still is very lethargic and unhappy so i'm still stressing out over this. I had a phone consultation with my GP about being prescribed diazepam and i told her that he had suggested 2mg at night and then 6mg in the morning before i go, but when i told my GP she said i should be fine with only 4mg in the morning. I've never had diazepam before so i don't have any idea what it will be like. Do you think the 4 in the morning will be enough to calm me down? Another question is about iv sedation, my dentist is referring me for this but how safe is it? Are you actually out cold like with a general anaesthetic? I'm terrified of not waking up, i've got 5 kids so don't want to take any risks.

Medication always affects people in different ways so it is really impossible to say how you will feel after 2mg, 4mg or 6mg. I too had valium (diazepam) to get me through one or two of my appointments, especially when it came to extractions. However, as I had never taken anything like this before, what I did was a trial run just to see the effect it had on me. Oviously, when I did the trial I wasn't as het up as I would have been before an actual appointment and so I didn't think there was any effect all, until I got in a car to drive and then found my reflexes were slower than normal. So, do a test run but don't think that because you don't feel that much different it isn't having any effect on you, you might not think so, but others will see a difference. As for IV sedation, I was very lucky in having a toprate sedationist who in fact teaches sedation methods. I would say with regard to sedation it is perfectly safe, more so than GA and there are different levels. Some people have just a little, enough to sedate them but be aware of what is going on around them but not really care and then have no memory of what actually was done to them afterwards. In my case, I asked for a very deep level as I didn't want to be remotely aware at all, in other words have nothing which I could forget about. I just wanted to be out completely. Luckily for me, I was completely out to the world, had teeth extracted, didn't feel, see or hear a thing and woke up no ill effects, took painkillers before the numbing wore off (and of course being sedated hadnt even felt injections going in to the gums to numb them) so I was completely painfree. HOpe this is of help. Again, you will be fine, I am sure of it and in a few days, it will all be over and you will be feeling so proud of yourself for having gone through with it and such a sense of achievement.

Hi, i posted here last week about my extraction tomorrow, i already tried to cancel but was told that the next appointment would'nt be until June so decided not to but i'm so tempted to again. All i can think about is this appointment and its like a huge cloud hanging over me. I was talking to my sister yesterday and she was telling me about the last tooth she had extracted and how difficult it was to get out and that she had to go back a few days later to get the socket cleaned out. This happened to me one time before and it was absolute agony as they did'nt numb me before doing that. So not only am i scared that it will be difficult extraction and that i'll feel pain, which is my biggest fear! but that i'll have problems with the socket after.

I know that if i cancel it will be a big mistake but i just don't want to go through this. I have some diazepam to take tonight and in the morning. Just hoping that someone can talk me out of cancelling!

You sound like me!!! I understand how you feel. It's the panic of the unknown.

I actually went to the dentist today... after cancelling the appointment twice... I actually kept this appointment.
I panicked like you are doing...couldn't stop myself from imagining the worst.

...but I did it! ...three fillings... and I was soooooooooo dreading it but knew that I couldn't put it off forever... I FORCED myself to go!... and now it's done!

Don't listen to other people's horror stories...or compare it to past painful visits... there is nothing to say that this visit will be anything like the last one.

Last time I had a extraction I lay in the chair shaking like a leaf and feeling so ill... I waited for the intense pain & problems (like you are doing)...next thing he said it was done??... and I was amazed how quickly and trouble-free it was. No pain...just some tugging and cracking sounds...but NO pain!
The relief I felt after it was done was enormous...

If you can just force yourself to keep the appointment the relief you will feel afterwards will be sooooooo wonderful. Don't think the worst (although I know how hard it is not to do that) because it will probably be a lot easier than you think.

Do you have trust in the dentist? Try to trust that he knows what he is doing and will have the skill to remove the tooth quickly and easily.

Pleeeeeeeeease don't cancel... because you know that it will just get worse.... FORCE YOURSELF to do it.... you will be so proud of yourself if you do!

Let me know how you go.... I so hope you go!!! DON'T cancel!

You can absolutely do this. HelpMe is right, there's no point in listening to other people's horror stories. For every horror story there are dozens, maybe even hundreds, of people who have stories that are quite boring and uneventful. If you look at the stories of people who have had extractions since they found this site, you'll find that the vast majority have stories just like HelpMe's. They were terrified and were waiting for the pain and suddenly the dentist said, "That's it. We're done."

When you go to your appointment tomorrow (notice, I said WHEN, not IF), be sure to have a little chat with your dentist first. Tell him (or her) about your fears and your past experience...even if you've already discussed this with him/her in the past. Bring some music to listen to, maybe a stress ball or two...you'll be fine.

As for the socket problems, if you follow your dentist's instructions carefully you shouldn't have any trouble. You'll be ok.

The fear that you're putting yourself through by postponing is far worse than just going ahead and getting the whole thing over with.

I think early on in our appointment schedule we all tend to feel like cancelling but that little bit of common sense sometimes hidden way back in our brain somewhere tells us that it would be silly to come this far, actually making the appointment, cancel and then have to go through the whole procedure again of making an appointment and then again agonising over whether to go or not. If we did that we know that we would be prolonging the 'agony' and I use the word only reservedly because that is a well known phrase. It won't be agony at all, what is agony is the fear of the unknown but getting yourself into that chair, all will be revealed and you will know exactly what needs to be done so that one fear for a start will be banished.

You can do it, we know you can do it, you yourself know you can do it, so try and get those legs into action so you can walk or drive to your appointment. If you feel you cannot voice all your fears and concerns, do write them down and perhaps hand them to the dentist first.

you have already received some great advice so I will just say you can do it! be strong and you will get through this, it will be over before you know it and you won't need to worry about it anymore. In my experience, the time spent stressing, worrying and panicking about an upcoming appointment is worse than the appointment itself. You have already been through all that leading up to your appointment so why put yourself through it again in a couple months, chances are your fear will just grow the longer you put it off. And like was already said you will feel so relieved and proud when it's done! Good luck tomorrow, we'll be thinking of you

You can do this.Also I am the queen of cancling appointments.My dentist would be shocked if I actually showed up...if I did show up it was just because I coulden't take the pain.Any way u can do this.Try not to be afraid of after-wards.If u do everything that the dentist suggests and then some you should be ok.(I know it is easier said than done)
Last week I had 8 teeth pulled at one time and so far I haven't had any trouble with the sockets.I am trying to do what my dentist said(The smoking I haven't done so good.
The fact u made the appointment shows strength and courage...be proud of yourself for that.try not to worry about the experiance others have had(negetive ones)because evryone is different.
Stay strong u can do this and you will feel so much better when its done.I am so happy to have those nasty teeth out of my mouth.Take care ...make sure your comfortable and u can get through this.You will be in my prayers.

Well i have'nt cancelled and i won't cancel in the morning as my appointment is at 10.30. I've been prescribed diazepam by my GP so i'm hoping that will help take the edge off my panicky feelings. My dentist advised that i take 2mg at night and 6mg in the morning 2 and a half hours before i go, but my GP said that 4mg will be enough so not too sure how much i should actually take and not really sure if i need to take any tonight as i feel quite calm at the moment. It'll be in the morning that i really start to feel worried. I also did have a bit of bother before getting a tooth extracted, and its the same one on the other side this time, on the bottom. The dentist was almost sitting on top of me trying to pull it out. I just wish it was this time tomorrow evening and it was all over. Thanks for your support, i'll let you know how i get on. I feel like such a coward, i'm a 41 year old woman thats had 5 kids yet i'm petrified of the dentist.
