Partial Denture Question

Hi,

I still feel suicidal at the thought of losing my tooth but just want to know how partials work in case the worse happens. If I had a partial for a upper secondary premolar (on NHS) is it likely that you would be able to see wires and clasps? How do these things work?

Any info would be very much appreciated.

Hi I have a bottom partial and it hasn't got any wires or clasps and no nobody can tell.

Thanks for reply Carole. If you don't mind me asking, how does it work? The few I have seen have wire clasps etc. Are they available without metal on the NHS do you know?

Mine is just plastic with a tooth on it for the front gap an extraction left earlier this year. I am having it replaced next year with a bridge but until then it is fine. It is getting a bit loose now but I am aware of it and I am just careful when eating but often I forget and it is fine.

The tooth bit fits in the gap and the plastic bit goes behind my teeth, it is shaped around my teeth at the back and most of the time it stays there.

I have all my work done on the nhs as I cannot afford to go private either like yourself. As yours is for the top you get a natural suction that holds the top in. But if it is just one tooth that you are having removed then you could have a bridge put on some time after the extraction. Your gums need to heal and shrink back before they do a bridge to cover a gap so usually sometime between six and twelve months after extraction for the best result. You can have an immediate put in which is a temporary denture to get you over those months waiting. That is what I am doing at the moment as my tooth is at the front.

The bridge I had done on the top I didn't have anything there until the dentist I see now was doing a crown for the tooth next to the gap and she added the little false tooth for me to that. Nobody knows I have crowns or bridges unless I tell so I am really pleased with them.

My tooth doesn't actually need to go yet but I'm just trying to prepare myself mentally in case it does. I'm trying to visualise how these things work. I think then you are saying I could get something similar to a Nesbit restoration. I just can't bare the idea of seeing something connected to my teeth. I'm only in my late 30s so these things scare the hell out of me anyway.

I can't stand the gap when a tooth is extracted so I am happy for my bridges, they look and feel like our normal teeth. I can feel no difference.
