starsun...I can understand how you feel at least a little bit! My parents taught me the importance of brushing but they never really emphasized the importance of flossing! While I did go to the dentist and they did tell me I needed to floss, the habit never really stuck....I mean do kids ever really do something the the first time they are told?

Anyways, I finally came to my senses and realized what a horrible mistake I had made. I also realized that no matter how scared I was or how embarassing it might be...I HAD TO SEE a dentist for my own sake!

Before my appointment, I was a lot like you...I throughly prepared myself to hear that I needed teeth extracted or that I needed to see a periodontist. All that was needed, however, was a simple cleaning and I was good to go! I was suprised that it was so easy. I also felt much better for facing my fears and owning up to a mistake I had made instead of making things worse by allowing my fear to get the better of me!

Do it for yourself and get in the chair...you can do it!

oh my gosh....................................i...made...THE...call...... *throws up* [smiley=sick.gif]

Hmm... I don't think when im 19 I could call dentists and make an appointment and keep it;) so be very proud of yourself[smiley=cheers.gif]

If your really nervous...as I can tell you could see if your GP could prescribe something for the visit like valium or halcion ect.:)I don't have the greatest memory so I don't remember if this has been said.;)

Starsun, well done on making the appointment. That is a very big achievement so you're well on your way now.:grouphug:

Good show for you, starsun - reading your posts helped give me the courage to make my own appointment (after finding all sorts of excuses to put it off and put it off). Good luck, and remember - we're all with you on this!

yay! im so glad i gave you courage to make your own appointment! YOU CAN DO IT! :).

my appointment is tommorrow guys. i'm also going to a regular doctor tomorrow too for a check up. the doctor is going stick a needle in my arm and take my blood :o. i think i'm more scared about the needle than my dentist appointment.

my nerves are sticking to kick in. the argument i had with a family member this morning didn't help either. they're soo unsupportive. i was about to have a mental breakdown after the argument. after hiding in the bathroom for about 30 minutes bawling my eyes out i felt a little better. the first thing i wanted to do when i came out of the bathroom was to go to this forum because you guys have been so great at supporting me and giving me comforting words, i don't think i could've made an appointment without you guys. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :).

I hate needles at the doctor also[smiley=hiding.gif]

Best of luck for your appointment[smiley=cheers.gif]:grouphug:

Good Luck Tomorrow Starsun! Hope Everything Goes Fabulously For You!!!! We Will All Be Sending Positive Thoughts In Your Direction <3 Let Us Know How It Goes!

thank you mikey and kitkat!

the dental office called me earlier to confirm my appointment, but i missed the call because i did not have my phone with me. the lady left me message saying she wanted me to call them back and confirm the appointment. But the message was quite static-y so i had to replay it a few times. I noticed that she said appointment at "4:45" but i was like huh? i thought my appointment was at 12:30, so i called them back to confirm, then i asked, "I just wanted to confirm that my appointment is at 12:30" and the lady was being kinda rude and said "WELL. 12:45. but you have to give yourself 20 minutes to look over paper and fill them out." then i was like "oh okay, i thought i heard a different time on the voicemail, i just wanted to confirm." and she had a rude tone again and said "Yes. give yourself 20 minutes for paper ok? ok. bye"

at that point my mouth was wide open and i couldnt believe she was so rude all the other times i've called them everyone was so nice. now i'm starting to get real scared and dread this appointment. oh my gosh. AHHHH. all these bad thoughts are rushing back. :o!!!!!!!!!!!

Just bear in mind that sometimes receptionists are very busy, answering phone, dealing with patients face to face, inputting data onto the computer etc. Not an excuse really because there is never an excuse for rudeness, but perhaps this person was having a busy day and/or a bad day for one reason or another. The dentist you see will not be like that I am sure, and will be charming, cheerful and absolutely A1 at his job. All the best for the appointment and do report back to us afterwards letting us know how it all went.:grouphug:

hi everyone. im back from my doctor+dentist appointment.

i probably should sound more excited, but i am so drained!

i was bawling like a baby today..................not at the dentist, but at my doctor check up! i was already super duper nervous about it since i knew they were gonna stick a needle in me and take my blood. i started crying when the doctor pulled out the needles. she had her back turned, she didnt know i was crying but i was like "may i have some tissues please" and when she turned around to give me tissues she was like ":o" because i was crying. then she patted me on the head and just told me to relax because it will be quick. at first, when she stuck the needle in my arm i was okok calm hey it doesnt feel that bad. but she had messed up the first time so she had to poke me again. that one hurt!!!!!!!! after that i was like WOOHOO im done. but she pulled out another needle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she said i needed to have another shot (i forgot for what, i was too busy crying) and she proceeded to poke me in my other arm. that wasnt too bad either, i was so relieved cuz i thought i was done. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she told me i needed another shot to test for tuberculosis. that one hurt the MOST!!! but after that i was FINALLY done.

after the doctor appt i went right away to my dentist appointment. for some reason i wasnt even nervous. maybe because i was too tired from my doctors appt. but they took my xrays, i waited for the dentist for 20 minutes. one of the nurses came in and took out some needles..i was staring at her every move while she filled up the needles and i finally said in a scared voice "...those arent for me right?" then she laughed and said "oh, no! im sorry!! didnt mean to scare you!"

5 minutes after that the same nurse and the dentist came in. he asked me how i was doing and the nurse jokingly said "shes terrified!" and i couldnt agree more. my palms were starting to sweat and i felt tears starting to come out but i held them back. he took a few glances at my xrays and said that my condition was "severe" which made my heart drop. he asked me how long has it been since my last dental visit and i told him it has been more than 10 years. he started explaining the condition of my teeth and for some reason he said "considering that you havent been to a dentist in 10 years, you condition is ok. your bones are not destroyed yet" which was a relief to hear but it was also confusing because just a few moments ago he said my condition was severe:-??

so here's what i need:

1. scales
2. root canal
3. crown
4. 3 fillings

he also said there were too much gunk in my teeth that i needed to do scales ASAP and let the gums heal first. he was also very worried about the tooth that needed root canal because the cavity is so deep.

overall it was an okay experience. i'm relieved that i finally know the real condition of my teeth instead of always guessing and scaring myself.

thank you again for all your support. i was thinking about you guys the whole time :). [smiley=cheers.gif]

and for some reason they kept calling me lucky :-?.

I think they were right to say you were lucky. Okay you have scales, I presume you mean cleaning to be done, a root canal, 3 fillings and a crown but it could be so much worse, you don't need to lose any teeth so after a few appointments your teeth will be restored to nice shiny, healthy teeth which is so good for one's confidence and if one is feeling good about oneself and confident then everything else seems to get so much better all round. So well done on today, now you know exactly what has to be done at least you won't have fear of the unknown so that it one hurdle over with. Although you've yet to face the actual treatments, it really will get easier from now on. So well done, you've done well, can be extremely proud of yourself. Have you yet made the next appointment or are you going to think about it and give them a ring?

Well done Starsun - it sounds like the doctor was way worse than the dentist's..sounds like you were a bit of a pincushion.....if it's any consolation dental injections are usually much more comfortable (can be totally painfree with the right technique) than the ones medical doctors do - also you don't have to see anything if you look up at the ceiling.

Minus points for the nurse preparing syringes while you were looking on waiting for dentist....

Congratulations again :grouphug: [smiley=jumping.gif] [smiley=party.gif]

does the dentist offer any sedation? if not mayby your GP could prescribe something for you to take to calm down;)

Great job on your appointment!!!!!

Great Job Starsun!
You've taken a major leap forward to better dental health! Congratulations! Sounds like you had a rough day!!!! If I had a doctors appointment like that I would be pretty exhausted too! On the bright side, at least it softened the blow for the dental appointment and I'm sure in comparison seemed much less stressful...you can't go springing extra unexpected needle sticks on a person like that and not expect them to react...you need time to prepare for that kind of thing ahead of time! I know that "surprise" (in a bad way) feeling all too well! My mom scheduled dental appointments for me in the past and pulled the old "oh my gosh! I forgot to tell you..." and before I knew it I was in the dentist's chair with my head spinning!!! As a word to the wise...don't do that to your children, it can be kinda traumatic! lol

Best of luck with your next appointment!
Kitkat

thank you all :).

yes i was indeed a pincushion yesterday. but i'm glad its done now. although, i woke up today with both my arms very sore. and i also have a huge blue-purple bruise where the doctor took my blood yesterday. it's very irritating. i cringe everytime i look at it :o. i'm trying really hard to not put any pressure on it.

i will try my best to update you guys after my next apopintment. should i still post updates in this thread? since this is the "support" section..
